I've been having a call audio problem for a long time with my 8900, that I usually mitigate by using a headset or Bluetooth. The issue is that I thought the call volume was always extremely low, and I could barely hear when just using the handset. What I found today is that the sound from a normal call is not coming out of the speaker on the front, which would be in line with your ear, but is actually coming out of the speaker that is used when using the speakerphone!?!?!?

When I press the button for the speaker phone it acts as it should with high volume and is no problem, when I switch back to the handset the volume drops and the sound does not come out of the speaker that would be online with your ear.

Has anymore else had this problem? Did you find a resolution?

I don't know -- never encountered this myself -- but sure sounds like a hardware issue.

You say it's been a long time with this issue. But how are you with it? Does it get dropped a lot? What about moisture? I doesn't take much to cause issues...sweaty pocket, humid shower room, etc.

Of course try a hard reset--with the power on, remove the battery for at least 30 seconds. I've a feeling it isn't going to help. But try it.

See what others say. You could also try wiping the BlackBerry with JL_CMDER and then reinstall the software, if perhaps it is a software problem. But that's a long shot, I'm guessing. Still maybe worth a try, however.

I think this might be a software issue. I have tried the restarts to no avail. It has been like this for a long time but it was only recently that I realized that the sound was coming out of the top of the phone rather than through the ear speaker.

I am going to try rolling back the software to an earlier version as my wife 8900 doesn't have this problem.

Post an update when you get the chance..... I was thinking about it afterward. Reason I thought hardware is I was thinking the speakerphone key/button could be faulty, or damaged from moisture exposure. But the more I thought about the more I wasn't so sure.

This may well be a fault with the front speaker, one of mine did the same thing but first the sound distorted and then failed completely, a speaker change fixed the problem.
