It's controlled by the amount if ambient light. Your screen will be brighter in bright conditions and dimmer in darker ones so that it will not blind you. The keyboard light reacts just the opposite, off in bright light and on it dim light. I will say that I have noticed quite a few times that it has gone off when I considered lighting to be inadequate.

If you cover the LED it should light up always if it's not in sleep mode. If it fails too then I would say that you have an issue.

This is a big omission on RIM's part, not having any adjustment for the keyboard lighting, only the display backlight. Hopefully in the final OS 5 we'll see a keyboard backlight adjustment option.

Gooosh thanx this was what I was looking for!!
I just got a new BB after I went back to the store with this complaint and thought it was allready broken because sometimes the keyboardlighting goes off and then back on!the store didn't tell me this and sent my phone back to blackberry and I got a new one!

but with the new one I noticed the same thing now too so NOW I finally understand why THANKS AGAIN!!!
