If you are a customer in good standing with your carrier for at least six months, they should be able to provide you with an unlock code. Another option would be to pay a small fee from a reputable outside company for the code. I recommend these folks:

Destination carrier doesn't matter. Unlocking removes the subsidy lock that restricts you to a specific carrier. Either you unlock to allow all carrier SIM's or you don't unlock at all. There's no such thing as "unlocking to" a carrier.

Once you get the code instructions are definitely available via search (if not in the FAQ).

Default Can any blackberry work with any carrier?

Can someone give me a straight answer to this?

With budgets the way they are I am looking to ebay or overstock.com to buy reburbished Blackberry 8330's. Can any blackberry device branded for Alltel/Verzion/Sprint/Nextel work with any carrier?

In particular our carrier is Alltel. Am I restricted to buying a Blackberry that is branded with the Alltel name?

What exactly does this "unlock" mean when looking at a blackberry. I see a post below that you can pay to have it done.

What does Unlocking really do?

thanks in advance!

Despite being discussed all over this forum, and despite the fact that you thread-jacked, here is the straight answer:

NO!

Unlocking is for SIM card-based providers only. CDMA carriers such as Alltel, Sprint, and Verizon can only use devices sold by and branded for them. You cannot purchase a T-Mobile device and use it on Alltel. You can't use an Alltel device on Sprint. Get the picture?

THANKS

For some reason I clicked the NEW THREAD from the forum and after I finished typing it asked me to LOG IN again. Something that is annoying with my proxy server...so I logged in and it added it to this thread.

so...

MY APOLOGIES FOR THE ACCIDENTAL THREAD JACKING. I TRIED SEARCHING THE FAQ BY 'UNLOCK' AND 'UNLOCKING' AND NOTHING CAME UP.

The internet needs more unfriendly people like you.

We're all friends here. Don't be alarmed by dc/dc's fondness of big fonts. He's being helpful dc/dc style. Stick around, you'll get used to the BBF posters...
