Our current servers running on VMs each have right at 500 users. These run on a single vProc and 1.5GB RAM. We're planning on dropping the RAM to 1.25GB, as it's not being fully utilized (from the VM reports on active memory usage).

Jibi,
Are you using local SQL or remote SQL? Are the SQL servers VMs?

You put your SQL server in a VM? That's gutsy.

Well I am happy to report after a minor reboot this morning, I've made the production cutover to an ESX VM. Machine is running 512MB of RAM with SQL Express 2005 and 4.1.4MR5. I only have around 60 users so I know this is peanuts compared to some of you guys

Monitoring is done through SNMP so basically I know immediately if it goes over set thresholds. Same goes for all the svcs, etc.

its funny because when I talk to TSupport I always ask if they've ever heard of someone using a virtualized BES and they always say no

That was directed at MonkeyMan. "I saw Yo Mama last night and boy was she tight..."

So... how bout that March Madness? That's some good basketball being played, right there...
...speaking of madness, I just got approval to have our systems guys build me a 64bit VM for our next BES server! 64bit OS, 64bit Domino, and 64bit BES. Cool! Had to work with the storage team to dedicate a RAID1 SAN disk for the transaction logs but things look pretty good.
The systems guys want their dirty little hands on my 3 1-year old IBM xSeries servers to add to their VM farm, so they are bending over backwards to help me plan this migration out.
Would like to see how many users I can migrate to this machine, and if it works out well I want to migrate the rest of the BES servers by end of year.

By the way, I'm in the process of revamping our DR plan to accommodate our ESX environment. By the time it's complete, we'll be 100% complete on our migration to ESX for our environment. I'll share some of the information once I have completed the plan.
For what it's worth, I know plenty of large organizations (Fortune 100) who are utilizing VMware ESX server for their BES infrastructure. RIM has just certified ESX 3.0 as of BES 4.1 SP5 and should be on the quick route to certify ESX 3.5 now that it's available, as well. Expect more from RIM on the front of virtualization and certification of the technology with it's solution. With the semi-cheap cost in storage and licensing, you could easily afford to break off more resource intensive components, such as the Attachment Service and MDS Connection Service, to help assist with the allowance of fewer resources on each BES server.

Hah, never thought to even ask ...
I never even thought to ask ... it was an experiment here, to install BES, and we didn't have hardware, we always go VM for new installs if we can. I do not want to buy hardware unless it is required. And, if it is required, then I do not want to use that product ... simple as that.
I want to work hard for my users, but I do not want to kill my self trying to restore some vague piece of software.
It's so easy to back up/restore vm's in their native format .... there are so many layers of understanding that's not necessary unless you just want that expert level ...
