Default BAS-AS.exe fails unexpectdly Admin services unavailable.

Please Login to Remove!

Hello, I have installed BESX 5.0.2 on a windows 2008 r2 64 bit server with exchange 2010. This is a single server environment. Due to space constraints I had to install BESX on the data drive, not the OS drive. The BB Admin services are set to automaticstart but repeadtedly fail unexpectly and I get the following system event errors. I can run the server config tool, but neither web console or web desktop work, IE cannot display the page, and the admin services crash. Let me know if there is any information in additon to these error logs that could be of use. I have already reinstalled once in case of a corrupted install, this did not help. Help please. I have all the BESX logs if any of those would help determine this issue, I am going through them but am new to BESX and would greatly appreciate some help. thanks.

Exclamation

Just had this happen to me as well. Clean install of Windows 2008 R2 Standard 64-bit with the MAPI client and CDO 1.2.1 objects installed, nothing else.

I had exactly the same errors with my new installation of BESX 5.0.2 and WIN 2K8 R2 - then came across this artical

(Cant post the link - not enough posts yet, new here - its KB23927 on the blackberry web site)

Which said to uninstall these Windows updates:

KB979538
KB981852

I only had KB981852 install so I removed it - rebooted and all was well

Took me nearly two days to find it - Hope this helps.

Hi,
I had the same issue- It appears to be caused by KB2393802. I only removed that hotfix from that batch of updates. That happens to replace the same files as the two previous hotfixes that caused this issue.

I uninstalled every KB listed in this thread and still no love. Not sure what to do next. This is my first attempt at running BES_X and it all installed great but i can't actually add users.

Have you made sure to hide the updates, so they don't get re-installed automatically?

Make sure these three are not installed

KB979538
KB981852
KB2393802

and they are all hidden.

this blackberry KB:

KB23927-BlackBerry Administration Services continually stops and restarts, after an operating system hotfix is applied

apparently I am not authorized to post a link so I had to butcher it a bit:

black berry website /btsc/dynamickc.do?externalId=KB23927&sliceID=1&command= show&forward=nonthreadedKC&kcId=KB23927

seems to be the same issue and only identifies these two updates as the problem:

Hotfix for MS10-021 related to Microsoft KB979683
Hotfix for MS10-047 related to Microsoft KB981852

I wish there was more consensus on what actual updates are the problem.

Microsoft KB979683
Microsoft KB981852
Microsoft KB2393802

are the correct ones (sorry, mis-typed the first KB in my previous post). They are all Kernel hotfixes. The last Microsoft KB is not in the RIM KB, because they have not covered the Feb 2011 update yet (last update of RIM KB: 7-Jan-2011)

Hi freakinvibe,

Thanks for the clarification; I have uninstalled all three. I hid two of them from future install but KB981852 isn't coming up as a possible update, but I don't see it installed either. Not sure whats up with that. Perhaps it is really still installed? I know for sure I found and uninstalled it once and can no longer see it installed.

Still, after a reboot, when bas_as.exe loads, it first gets up to about 100MB of ram and sits there for a few mins. Then it starts using most of the cpu and the ram it is using increases constantly until we hit about 350MB then it tanks.

I thought perhaps more ram would help so I increased the ram on the VM frrom 2 gigs to 3 gigs so now there is some spare memory available when bas_as.exe gets to 350MB (perhaps 750MB spare ram) but still it tanks at 350 MB. So I don't think it is a ram issue. I do have exchange 2010, BES_X 5.02 and BAS all installed on the same VM. I know some people have had memory usage issues with this setup but not the crashing from what I have read so far. Plus, if I stop the bas-as.exe service, then everything else runs fine. I only have 6 exchange users and really only want to have 6 blackberries connected to this thing (currently I have zero) and don't think I should need to have the 7 server install some people mention. If that is really necessary for 6 users, then the blackberry developers are doing something very wrong.

My host is windows 2008 running vmware server 2.02 with 8 gigs of ram. I have other VMs for DC and VPN etc also running and the host sits at about 7GB of memory in use now that the exchange/BES_X VM is up to 3 GB ram. It has a 3ghz quad xeon processor using around 27% cpu.

I uninstalled every windows update from feb 2011 (not non-windows OS related updates like sql server 2005 sp4 that I just installed but likely came our some time ago) and it still happens.

Personally If I could just get the few users I need set up, I couldn't care less if this app loads or not. If I had one user in the database I could figure out what goes where in the database and I prolly wouldn't need bas_as.exe. perhaps RIM/MS will get this worked out.

Default Re: BAS-AS.exe fails unexpectdly Admin services unavailable.

It is normal that the BAS-AS.exe service takes around 2 minutes to fully load (although in the Windows Services applet, it immediately shows as "Started"). Once fully loaded, it takes about 780 MB of memory. The BAS-NCC.exe takes another 110 MB. (which is really absolutely mad for a simple administration console...).

The messaging agent and the MDS CS are another 200 MB each. So you should have at least 1.5 GB RAM for BES only. If you then have SQL + Exchange on the same box, you need 4 GB or more in total.

We have BES on a separate VM and we have 4 GB assigned and that seems to be enough.
