Looks like the way that theme shows that the BB data is available.

I was unable to locate the icon used to indicate a AppWorld update is available but it sure looks like it.

I did some checking and couldn't find a good answer either. My best guess is as johnling suggests, it is the theme's way to tell you that you are connected to RIM. Could also be related to App World as tsac mentioned or it could be a BBM connect message.

Personally, I would go with the former.

Yup my 9780 shows the same when I'm in 3G coverage. It disappears when I drop down to EDGE.

Found it!! It is the indicator for 3G service.

KB20850-BlackBerry icon beside the 3G network indicator will not reappear after powering off and turning back on the BlackBerry smartphone

Also, while I don't disagree that your KB link is very insightful I'm not sure that it clearly spells out if the icon is directly related to 3G (it never says "the blackberry icon indicates 3G coverage" etc...)

It's not redundant..... Seems the presence of the BlackBerry symbol indicates connection to the RIM servers the way EDGE vs edge and GPRS vs gprs do, if I am reading KB02334-Network status indicators from the GSM/GPRS/EDGE/3G networks correctly (as John wrote in post #2).

earlier when id turned off my wireless networks it stayed up but now that I'm not in 3g I see its gone

The small RIM icon next to the wireless icon in the OP image shows he is connected to the RIM servers via wifi.

When connected via 3G to the RIM servers it will appear next to the 3G icon.

3g (with lower case g) means you are in an area without 3G (upper case G) coverage and the phone is unable to connect to the RIM servers.

all that seems reasonable except that I'd think you'd be able to connect to RIMs servers no matter what, no?

You can...either via the mobile network or via wifi.

I'm not sure what is quoted is correct, or at least I'm going to have to pay attention and see. If my BlackBerry is connecting entirely over wifi and not using the mobile network I know I do not see EDGE at all, just UMA. I believe it will be same when in 3G signal range. And when the BlackBerry is connecting on both wifi and the mobile network, I see EDGE and the white wifi indicator. I assume if I were in 3G range I would see 3G plus the BlackBerry logo along with the white wifi indicator under the same circumstances where the BlackBerry is connecting on both wifi and the mobile network.
