Hi!
I write from Italy and I am new of the Blackberry world. I got a 8100 Perl from a friend.
the phone is marked as TIM Italy, but I use a WIND Italy sim card.

the phone has the 4.2 OS and I was thinking to put on a new 4.5 OS, but I haven't understand yet which one to chose.

I have found these OS on the main Blackberry website:

-> 4.5.0.75 TIM Italy Multilanguage (to have both Italian & English)
-> 4.5.0.85 WIND Italy Multilanguage (to have both Italian & English)

You link in this forum these other OS:

-> 4.5.0.92 ORANGE France Multilanguage (to have both Italian & English)
-> 4.5.0.108 VODA Australia NON Multilanguage (English + EastAsia languages)

now...what are the really big differences between them? I really can't understand why there are so many different versions...

I would like to have both the Italian and English language for personal reasons, but I would like to know what are the main differences in installing a different carrier OS.

if I put the ORANGE France OS, will I have some ORANGE icons or some ORANGE stuff?

I thought that was good to always install phone carrier OS... mine is marked as TIM Italy: is the 4.5.0.75 TIM Italy good enough so to be used as a final OS??

All of the OS's are written by RIM. Some carriers release before others thus loading a different carriers. Or you wait until your carrier releases go ahead and use another carriers. Most on here aren't using an OS from their carrier

but the differences between carrier versions is ONLY in some kind of carrier logo or links or some particular carrier icons OR the os is coded differently??

I was thinking to install the last Multilanguage os available on the net.
is this a good idea???


I have to say that this os is from another carrier different from the one of the phone, and I am afraid to have then different stuff installed from the os of the phone carrier.

in addition to this I really don't think my carrier will release soon another os because the last 4.5.0.75 works good and the phone carrier is not selling 8100 any more...

please let me know what you think.

newer releases fix different bugs, like any software. any version os made for your model phone will work if installed properly.

if you have a problem down the road your carrier can claim you voided the warranty by using an "unauthorized" os. if this worries you, maybe stick with what your carrier has approved.

and if you say you've got a version that works, why fix it?

I have version 4.2 and I know of people using my carrier's os 4.5.0.75...but this one does not support microSD greater the 4Gb, and I would like to use one of 8Gb.

I bought my 8100 used from a friend and it has no warranty on it anymore, so I think I'll try to install one of the last os available on the net.

where can I find a goot guide to how upgrade the 8100 os?

BlackBerry Device Software 4.3.0 -- Up to 8 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.5.0 -- Up to 8 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.5.0.81 and above -- Up to 16 GB

from the FAQs

the way I read that, your carrier's version would be fine for an 8 GB card.

I only belabor the point because you seem so unsure.

The best guide is the instructions posted WITH the links in at the TOP of this 8100 section. You follow those directions EXACTLY as posted and IN ORDER as written, and you will be fine.

thank you very much, but I wanted to say that I would like to use a 16Gb microSD.

while I'm writing this post I am considering that maybe a 8Gb microSD might be fine enough for me, so my point is to figure out what does a 4.5.0.108 os have newer or better then a 4.5.0.75 os.

is there some kind of changelog of these os??

there is no changelog other than reading the threads on this forum where uses will comment. Your best bet NORMALLY is to load the latest OS issued. RIM obviously chose to issue a later release for reasons (unknown to us) that supposedly fix bugs or issues.

This is not true. They will simply ask you to downgrade before continuing with support, and even then only if they suspect the issue is device related. If you call with something that is obviously network related you can still get support. If it's device related then you're going to come here for support anyway.

but is there any chance to get a fried BB with a bad install of some OS while or after an upgrade that does NOT give the opportunity to install any other OS??

I mean...is there a way to make big mess with installing an OS so to kill definitely the BB 8100??


Ps: but installing new OS on an old one does it mean that the phone will lose all contacts, sms, mms and all stored settings and things, even on the microSD???

if you follow the instructions given word for word it is a very simple process.

one of the first instructions is to make a back-up and remove the sd card. yes, the os install will take out all pim but the restore done at the end will put it all back.

find the instructions in the stickied threads, they will save you if you read them.

If the upgrade fails for any reason you can still recover. it is safe.

I am about to get an used 8100 from a firend, so it will not be brand new.

I don't think I'll use any of his stuff, not even carrier settings or apps (he doesn't have any interesting one), so I was thinking if it was a good idea to ERASE/DELETE/FORMAT everything away from the BlackBerry with the Wipe Handheld option from the menu AND/OR even do a complete wipe with Jl Cmder...

what do you think? is it a good idea to format everything and start with a complete fresh install of everything??

in case it is a good idea, should I do those things both or should I do only the complete wipe??

Yes it is a good idea.

You will be fine using the JL_cmder "set to factory default" command.
