I'm going to be ordering (hopefully) the 8220 tomorrow, unlocked to use on my T-Mobile voice-only plan. Now, I've read around that I'd have to call CS to get them activate the blackberry service enabler, is it still true that I have to do that if my phone's unlocked?
I don't plan on adding a data plan until I get a raise, which won't be until next year at the least, and when I talked to a Tmo rep. last week, she mentioned absolutely nothing about the proposed data-plan requirement everyone's worrying about.
Besides the BB service enabler, is there anything else I should worry about? I'm basically getting the phone for texting right now, I have an iPod touch to use for internet and IMing, so it's not an issue for me.

Welcome to the forums!

A couple of points:

1. Unlocking the device allows you to use another GSM carrier besides T-Mobile. It has no bearing on your abilty to use data without a BlackBerry Data plan.

2. You will have to call T-Mobile to have the data enabler added to your account.

3. Required data plans for T-Mobile Blackberrys are probably inevitable. Don't know when this will go into effect, though.

Okay, that answers a few things. I'm debating on just going ahead with the data plan, though for the moment I'll settle with calling them to activate the data enabler.

I believe the data plan requirement is for new accounts, and doesn't apply to Pearls (even when it's a new account).
