Default Components of the "data plan" and today's outage

Please Login to Remove!

Mobile carriers use a broad term "data plan" that allows " browsing and getting email", but under closer scrutiny the things are not that simple. Below is a brief summary of how some of my applications have behaved during today's infamous data outage:

1) Native BB Browser: won't load web pages.

2) Bolt Browser: won't load web pages. It also keeps resetting connection type from "socket" to "http" (in configuration).

3) Opera Mini: loads pages ok, like nothing has happened.

4) BB Email: you can send messages but receive nothing.

5) Connection Status (taken from Bloomberg Mobile app):

- BIS-B: connection error
- Direct (TCP): can connect
- Direct WAP: can connect

The most intriguing question is why Opera Mini browser worked perfectly, while both BB browser and Bolt failed miserably. Does Opera Mini use TCP or WAP instead of BIS?

Not sure it's quite so clear. My Opera Mini (love it!) worked just fine all day. My native browser worked pretty much as usual - just a couple times where a page didn't load.

The.only thing I've had trouble with has been email. I didn't notice it until a meeting broke at 9 (eastern time) and there were no new messages. I always get messaged during meetings! (I don't typically use bbm or pin.)

And the messages still haven't quite caught up, but it's getting closer. Thank goodness for webmail and an Internet connection!

Opera Mini works on your carrier's data network, not RIM's network, so it should have worked as normal.

everything that wasn't working goes through BlackBerry servers.
TCP/IP and WAP goes through carriers data network without using BB Servers.

Since the RIM Servers were down the mail, calendar, Internet Browser, IM wasn't working properly

Opera uses TCP IP setting s of the handset and WAP browser uses the WAP settings of the carrier
