I think others have had this problem but hard to find a straightforward answer. I have a 9800, BB data plan with Optus Australia, travel a lot internationally and until recently BB services (email, messenger, etc) have worked fine on all manner of wifi networks (airports, cafes, workplace, etc).

I am currently in Sierra Leone no roaming available but last time I was here (Aug) got BB service via various wifi networks no problems. This time no wifi networks give me any BB services (no BB icon) but the browser works fine. Data roaming is on but I think this is for phone 2G & 3G networks and does not affect wifi.

I have updated OS, tried to re-send service books, scoured the net for a fix, but to no avail.

Could this be as a result of the recent outages? I get the impression others have had this problem post outage but may just be coincidental.

Any ideas on how to fix this, otherwise I think I will have to wait until I get back to the real world.

Not all WiFi networks are created equally.
You need to know what type of service is made available via the particular WiFi network you're on.
Some only allow web browsing and will block anything else. Others allow more services.
Some are wide open.
Check with the WiFi provider and see if they are doing any port blocking, filtering, etc.
