Default What do I need to do to secure a Bold?

Please Login to Remove!

Hello. I'm a T Mobile user in the US and I'm wanting to get a Bold release day or as close to it as possible. I'll need it unlocked obviously, and I'm wondering what everyone thinks my best bet at getting one is? Can I buy one straight from an AT&T store without being a customer? Should I go ahead and pre order it from tigerdirect? Will the unlocked device function fully (as my unlocked Curve does now?) on the T-Mo network? I don't really have a clue what to do to make sure I get one, so I thought the experts here could help. Thanks in advance!

An unlocked device will fully function on T-Mobile, but you will not have 3G if I understand correctly. All other functions should operate fine, though. I will have some unlocked Rogers devices for sale the day they are released that i am going to be putting on ebay. That will be your best bet for getting one on launch day unless you are within driving distance or know someone in Canada.

Will you are absolutely correct. Rogers and T-Mobile do not run on the same 3G frequency, so if the OP wanted to get a Bold he would really just be buying a beefed up Curve. I would wait until T-Mobile gets the device and not waste your money on eBay, because the price will get VERY steep for these, especially since they are unlocked. T-Mobile should be getting the Bold, but not for a decent amount of time. If you were on AT&T it would be a different story, because Rogers and AT&T run on the same 3G frequency and you would get data and everything, but on T-Mobile it would just be voice and text. Sorry OP, but just try and stick it out (as hard as that is) and sooner or later it will come to T-Mobile.

Also OP... what provider was your Curve originally from?? I think EDGE frequencies are the same for everyone, which is why you would be getting data on the Curve, but that I could be wrong about.

To clarify, there are four main frequency ranges for GSM/GPRS/EDGE which center approximately 850, 900, 1800 and 1900Mhz. (See Wikipedia for exact numbers). Basically, nearly all of the world's possible frequencies for EDGE is supported, so EDGE works if the network supports EDGE. (I'm excluding GSM 450Mhz, which is a very niche frequency)

HSDPA/UMTS have different frequencies, and it is in theory possible to have a multiband model that is compatible with both Rogers and T-Mobile. However, the Bold only supports only some of the frequencies (at this time).

So it's not a simple matter of "EDGE frequencies are the same for everyone" -- just the Bold happens to support pretty much all of the currently-used EDGE frequencies but only some of the currently-used HSDPA/UTMS frequencies are supported.

re: Rogers Blackberrys

I recall reading a while back that Rogers was no longer issuing unlock codes for their Blackberrys. Is this true, or am I mis-remembering an old news story?

Thanks for all the info everyone. I think I'll wait until T-Mo releases one, as I didn't realize I'd miss out on the 3g. I'll probably be able to get it a lot cheaper with a contract renewal as well. Also Burton my Curve is from AT&T. My work used to get a massive discount so I got my 8310 for $50 brand new about 6 months ago. It was a better deal than T-Mo offered me even with a contract renewal, and I don't really need the wireless on the 8320. Thanks again for the help guys, this is why I love this forum.

Not sure where you are on your contracts.
Would this work?:
Sell the 8310 on e-bay. Use the $ to buy out your TMobile account.
Get a new account with a Bold on AT&T.

Contract has about a year left, but in my area T-Mo has much better service coverage than AT&T, so I'll just have to suck it up until T-Mo gets the Bold. :(

Service trumps any device. What good is a Bold to just look at?
