Interesting problem: my 9700's display is 1/3 blue and 2/3 white along a vertical line. You can see the vague outline of activity when you input. Voice commands work. I can dial out that way. However, it now will not complete a back up. Is it hosed, or is there something I can try to fix this? Many thanks.

what caused this?

and as of this point, consider all of your data lost.

Does this happen as the device is booting up? that is, do a batter pull and see if this same problem is there.

if it is, graigslist/ebay is your best bet.

I have no idea what caused it, but it was always there, even after several battery pulls. The phone functioned, but no display. I replaced it under warranty. Fortunately, everything was backed up. It's all good now. Thanks.
