Oops... by OP I actually meant someone who posted down a ways: redvtr1000. My memory got pooched and I thought he was the OP... sorry.

I know one user here from Manhattan had to go to some park on the Hudson and finally his GPS locked.
The Ephemeral Tables for the satellites must download to the device the first time after loading an OS, or traveling long distances, such as by air.
Give it 10 minutes.

I have done this.... out in the middle of nowhere. I work in NYC but live in Northwest Hicksville CT. I'll happily try again, but I'm wondering if there isn't another issue occurring. I'll try again tonight and post tomorrow.
Thanks for the advice.

It could be another issue, but I just have not seen other AT&T devices having their GPS disabled for some odd reason, including upgrades to 4.5, so I would press you to keep trying with all patience... I know one time I flew into and drove off from the Tampa airport in my rental no idea where I was headed, since I had my trusty GPS-enabled 8310 at my side. Woe was me, 10 miles down the interstate still waiting for GPS to refresh because I had forgotten to do so before I took off in the car. Moving at 70 mph it just would not refresh. Finally, I stopped and it did so.

I'll definitely try it again tonight (with an extra dose of patience thrown in for good measure).

Funny enough: I forgot to test this last night at the house, so I checked again this morning at the train station (in my car). Refresh satellites from Options... GPS synced close to immediately.
I'm surprised (and chagrined) that it ended up working after having tried so many times in the past. FWIW, I did the battery pull routine ~ 5 times yesterday troubleshooting other issues so I wonder if that cleared anything up. (probably not, but it will at least make me feel better to think that)
Thanks for being insistent that I try again.

I have the same trouble. I have followed all the advice in this thread and no satellites are to be found. I have left the device sitting on the hood of my car for 30 minutes now and no satellites.
I had no trouble with my GPS on my WM TyTN II nor my PPC 6800 Titan.
What could I try. Should I try to get the GPS to connect?

Under options/advanced options/gps there is a sub-menu that is "refresh GPS." That always works for me.

from the application view if I select Options>Advanced Options>GPS> and then push the blackberry symbol button that is to the left of the trackball I get:
Change Option
Save
Switch Application
Close
I don't see a refresh option
Thanks for your help. Any ideas? This is the 3rd GPS phone I've had but I've never had any trouble, but its my 1st BB

There is uncertainty as to whether Alltel disables their GPS on these devices, much like Verizon does the same on theirs. I believe they do.
My suggestion is that you call Alltel and confirm one way or the other and report back here. Since you don't have the option to "refresh" under the GPS menu, I think you will find it is so, and that they will require you to subscribe to TeleNav for the GPS to be enabled.
Let us know.

Try scrolling all the way down prior to pushing the BB button. Alternately, just hit the back button if you get the change option dialog. Then when you click the BB button, the Refresh Sats option should appear.
FWIW, I too have had 3 prior GPS enabled BB's and this is the first one I've had any issues with. I'm not sure if the GPS is just more sensitive to interference than others or what, but now that it's working, it does seem to be OK.

I called Alltel, after 15 minutes on hold I gave up and sent an email to CS @ Alltel.

Here was the Alltel email reply:
"GPS isn't locked on the device, but it's not going to work until it can communicate with our Location Based Services server, which you need an active account with Telenav to use.
Thank you,
Alltel Data Technical Support"

I had no trouble on my TyTN II but I bought it unlocked and unbranded. I had no trouble with my Titan but I had a cooked ROM on it. So we need a hack for the Alltel 8330. We had a great hacking community with our xda devices. Is there a hacking community with BB?

BlackBerrys can't be hacked. The GPS can't be hacked.
Thousand of posts here prove that.

Good reading here guys. My 8310 is on its way, coming from a 8320 and eager to see how the GPS will work for me. UMA was a nice feature, but not as advantageous to me as GPS would. So, we'll see.

8310 will have no restrictions by the carrier on the GPS app.

I assumed it would not. I dont use GPS much, if for a random dinner party that I am not familiar with. However, the kids get a grand kick out of it when we're driving. It makes their day. That being said, Google Maps will be just fine for me (us). LOL
