I've never used the 8520 as a recorder, and was wondering if it can record...

• lectures/interviews, by connecting an external, self-powered mike?
• voice calls?

... and if yes, how long can it record in voice-grade?

It will not work with an external mic, and being able to record calls is not a feature any BB has. You can try 3rd party solutions such as Google Voice for call recording.
