I need to save attachments to the media card, but with a few constraints:

Suppose I am out somewhere with a notebook and a Blackberry and no Internet connection around whatsoever, except my BIS service. Someone sends me a Word document. I can view it in my Blackberry, now I want to edit it on the notebook and send it back. We can save pictures to the media card, but not documents. Yeah, thanks for that, RIM!

I know that some programs allow me to edit an Office document directly on the Blackberry, but I don't want that. I really want to use a full-fledged desktop (or notebook), with the large screen and table keyboard. The last (but not least) constraint is that I use Linux, so Blackberry Desktop manager is ruled out.

I guess my only choice is to save the document to the media card, then send it to the notebook via USB.

What choices do I have?

There is no ability to save it to the media card. When OS 4.3 comes out in a couple months we will have this ability.

I'm pretty sure I've seen one or two applications that offer that feature. I posted the question here because:

- I can no longer remember which ones;

- I was hoping someone would offer me alternatives. Those Office document editing programs are too expensive for the little I want: just save attachments to the card. I have no interest whatsoever in editing documents directly on the phone. Although I admit that the remote storage services that usually accompany these programs are not completely useless.

BeamBerry will work but with server-based storage. I don't know of anything that will allow you to save the attachments to the card.

Speaking of which, BeamBerry is a pretty decent solution for online storage. I wonder for how long it is going to be free, and much it will cost eventually.

I use the beamberry but I do know that some people have issues with sharing their info with their server and in the original situation with limited connections, the whole matter is NOT fool proof.

I am glad you mentioned "sharing". When I open Beamberry, there two folders: My Documents and Shared Documents. Does anyone here know what that Shared Documents folder is about? They have a very brief instruction page that doesn't make it clear at all.

I have the Verizon 8130 BB. Under status it saysV4.3.0.6 (Platform 3.1.0.2)

Under Applications, it says System Software Version 4.3

Is this the OS 4.3 to which you refer?

I also want to save to the media card, but can't find that choice anywhere.

what about eoffice and efile from dynoplex? dont they offer options to save to media card? not a free solution but great software sets.

Yes, we can save documents (both native an pre-converted for editing) to the SD card, luc-moble, what did you hate about it? May be you had some problems our support can help you resolve?

And, like I said in this current thread (see above), eOffice is too expensive for me since I have no interest in editing documents right on the Blackberry. I just want to save files to the media card.

Yeah, I saw this, just did not connect the two threads. Something did go quite wrong with the installation based on your description and we can certainly help you toget this fixed, if you want. But you're right, we do not have a separate product that will allow you to save native attachments and that's all. This functionality is included in MasterDoc and eOffice and is also part of eWorks, but it is not a standalone product. eFile by itself is free, but as a freeware it only works with the files on the device. To access attachments you need to buy this feature. Interesting question - how much would you pay for such a product if it were to be offered separately?

i think its coming soon from rim for free with 4.3. if it does not i would probably pay 10-15$ for it.

Annoying question, I'd say. Not that you're annoying me, it's just that I (and probably many people as well) have the perception that such ability should've been included with the current OS in the first place. If I can save pictures and WAV files to the media card, why not other files? I can't come up with any reason. It sounds like a filter put there on purpose. I even feel that RIM removed the ability on purpose to save on bandwidth/resources and/or favor third-party developers or any other similar conspiracy theory. I feel a little robbed for not having that included already.

About your question: I guess I'd pay USD 10 to 15 gladly. 20 to 25 grudgingly. 30 to 35 only when the real and urgent need came up.

That is also an important aspect of the issue. I don't have an urgent need right now. If I really needed it NOW, and if I ever printed or faxed anything, then I guess MasterDoc would not be such a bad deal. The online storage should also be attractive to people with fast EVDO connections. All I have is EDGE.

OK, this sounds like a good idea. We're considering just what you have suggested - have a product that would only allow native attachment download and remote storage access. It should be coming out very quickly and we're thinking to price it at $19.95 - to use your words - somewhere between gladly and grudgingly . It will be basically a new package of the same components, so not much development will be required. We have one probelm we're struggling with at the moment - how to describe this functionality in 10 words or less to put the description on Handango. Any thoughts you might have on this?

as luc said im also not needing the ability of faxing, or online storage, $50 is too much for my use (only store attachment to storagecard)

and can use also put that program online at mobihand (not only handango) (I usually purchased blackberry software from mobihand)

and about program description, "a program to save any attachment to storage device "?

I also prefer Mobihand. Handango does not accept Paypal from foreign buyers, which is a deal breaker to me. I shop at Handango quite often, but always end up buying at Mobihand.
