I picked up my 64GB playbook today from Futureshop, I did not pre-order my playbook I simply drove over and picked it up.

Plugging it in and getting onto my wireless network for the first time prompted me to download a newer version of the OS. (v 1.0.1.1690) which is still downloading while I type this.

I would like to know when and what type of cable will I need to tether my device to my playbook since RIM stated today they 3G model won't be available until the next gen to the playbook is ready for release. I also don't mine teathering my device with my phone as having it as a cell phone device on it's own will only distract me more from doing important things like paying attention to the traffic in front of me!

Are you trying to tether with a BlackBerry? If so, no cable needed. Bridge and proper tethering run over bluetooth. The setup will walk you through getting Bridge running, and if you want proper tethering, check the settings for getting that setup as well.
