Verizon has the fastest data network available. 3G EVDO. And I dialed 611 successfully with 1x.

can you explain I can call 611 from anywhere even if I have 1x.

I have 1x right now and just placed a call just fine.
For the past month or so randomly I have been loosing 1XEV to 1xev or 1x 1X when its in this state off the phone randomly I tried 611 and I get this pre recorded msg "your call can't be completed with some error msg". Now 60% of the time a batt pull fixes it, and 1XEV comes back and if I dial 611 that works again. Weird part is I don't change locations. Just weird they claim its the phone. I don't see a phone intermittently broken

Ok but thats just yours no one else is claiming to have the problem so how can it be their data network?

If I am able to place calls to normal 10 digit numbers when the evdo signal starts dropping doing weird stuff but 611 and *228 don't work I would say its their network and more of something in setting/provisioning the a phone.

Edit: they did last night re provision the phone after finding out the had isssues which could cause this.

The berry has this version installed from vz. This started about a month or so ago and in places where it never did this before. I think they fixed it or band aided for now.

Sometimes the local cell site that's powering your phone could be having problems as well. I've been in areas before where calls drop everytime for a week, but then obviously some maintenance was done and it works again.

I believe the lower-case letters (ev and x) mean the BlackBerry is attempting to login to the data service, so it makes sense that data features don't work then.

I agree it could be a problem just in your area. I have 1 x at home and have had since the first day I purchased. No cells work at my home. But I am still able to do *228 and get data services.
