Default BlackBerry Internet Service v2.2 Release Notes

Functional changes

New language support - BlackBerry® Internet Service Email now supports the rendering and transmission of the following languages: Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew, Russian, and Korean.

Enhanced Yahoo! Mail support - If subscribers add a Yahoo! ® Mail email account to their BlackBerry Internet Service account, they can delete a message from their Yahoo! inbox, and have the change reflected on their BlackBerry device. If subscribers have BlackBerry Device Software version 4.1 or later, they will receive a branded Yahoo! Mail icon on the BlackBerry device home screen.

Usability and user interface improvements - Improvements have been made to the contents of the online help, context sensitive help, and the user interface text descriptions based on customer, partner, and usability research feedback.

Read and delivery receipts - Subscribers can view delivery receipts when an email message is successfully delivered from their BlackBerry Internet Service email address. Once the email message is delivered to the recipient’s mailbox, the icon beside the sent message in the Message list on the BlackBerry device updates to show a “D” for delivered. Subscribers can respond to a request for a read receipt. Subscribers can change the settings for read receipts on their BlackBerry device. (Requires BlackBerry Device Software version 4.2.)

Auto forward - Subscribers can set an auto forward email address so that the BlackBerry Internet Service automatically forwards the full email messages including all applicable email message attachments and text that they receive on their BlackBerry device to the defined email address.

Address book vCard attachments - If subscribers receive a vCard® attachment, it is converted to a BlackBerry address book entry. If subscribers send a BlackBerry address book entry to another BlackBerry email address, the entry remains a BlackBerry address book entry on the recipient’s BlackBerry device. If subscribers send a BlackBerry address book entry to an email address that is not a BlackBerry email address, the entry converts to a vCard to properly render in the recipient’s email account.

Calendar iCal attachments - Subscribers can send and receive, accept or decline iCal meeting requests from other BlackBerry Internet Service subscribers. (Requires BlackBerry Device Software version 4.2 and is not supported on BlackBerry Connect devices.)

WAV file attachments - BlackBerry Internet Service version 2.2 supports .wav file attachments on the BlackBerry device. (Requires BlackBerry Device Software version 4.2.)

BlackBerry Connect support improvements - BlackBerry Internet Service version 2.2 has the following enhancements for BlackBerry Connect devices: native attachment support, xHTML-based account setup templates for devices, full support for all BlackBerry Connect software versions, new subscribers accounts automatically created on BlackBerry Internet Service Email version 2.2 platform, service book count optimizations, and relaxation of the user name must equal the BlackBerry email address restriction. (Applies to Asia-Pacific and European regions only.)

Any Idea when this will be in use for different providers? Lets say T-mobile since they are currently the only provider in the USA with a BB running 4.2 OS? this is a really cool find though!! Nice Work!

Great find.

The most important feature of BIS 2.2 for me is the iCal support! I have many contacts who send me calendar invites to my gmail calendar, which comes to my BB. Now I have to manually create the event on my BB calendar.

Lets hope the carriers upgrade soon and OS 4.2 is released for the 87xx platform.

I wonder if this version allows me to better connect to my work's exchange server? The current setup will not allow me to do so. What a pain. Has anyone else experience the same issue?

I would speculate that because T-Mobile is the only US provider with BB running 4.2, these new features were added by RIM for T-Mobile or by T-Mobile request.
That means, T-Mobile will be first to upgrade to BIS 2.2. Just like they were first to upgrade to BIS 2.

Does your work allow you to access your email via IMAP or POP? What makes you thing that its a BIS issue?

Any Idea how long before this upgrade might take place? the vcard issue is very much a pain to deal with. So far I have found no way to open the .DAT file on my blackberry running 4.2 OS. What would be the proper way to open such an attachment? There isnt even an option to open it, it just shows that I have an attachment and there is no way to see it.

That is interesting. This is partially the reason I post the contents of the KBase articles in case the link ever changes.

Absolutely! There are a number of members with registration IP addresses that go back to RIM. To respect their privacy, we don't point them out. This sparked my intrest so I checked and found that there are 134 members that appear to be from RIM.

Default Multiple email accounts

Hi,

Does anyone know if BIS 2.2 can handle multiple accounts replying? for example if i have a personal and a work account on BIS, i can choose which email address to reply from.

This would be a great time saver.

Thanks guys,
ktp

Hi, i'm not using t-mobile. so, the "reply as" function is dependent on the service provider. I'm using vodafone and i figured when they upgraded to BIS 2.2, then i would ge this reply as function...oh wel

As far as I know no North American providers support 2.2 as of yet.

Here's some 2.2 documentation though. Livelink - Redirection
