Default confused about adding on a data plan to an existing family plan

Please Login to Remove!

I currently have a lame dumbphone with a very basic/unimpressive talk + text family plan from T-Mobile. If I convince my parents I want a Blackberry would I have to start a completely new data plan and have them pay $60 a month ("talk + text + 200MB data" as listed on the T-Mobile site), or can I keep my family plan and just add the data "plan" which is required onto it, which is $30 or something like that, and get a new Blackberry? I feel so stupid asking this question....

Fish, your lucky that your plan provider is Tmobile, one of the best customer service groups out there.

First, get straight what it is that you want to do, (get a BB and a BB data plan, replace your current phone data plan with a BB data plan, etc)

Then just call a Tmobile rep with your proposed changes and ask what will be the least expensive way to do that. Be sure to keep clear notes of what you are told, and be aware of any trade offs that will be made to accomplish that. You won't be able to make changes to the plan because it is your parents that are the primary on it, but you will be able to go to them with the answers to the questions they will have about your proposed changes.

When I first went to Tmobile to add smartphones and data to my plan (for my daughter), I was shown how eliminate waste in my plan to pay for my changes at no additional cost to me.

Good luck

You...didn't quite answer my question. My question is whether it would be possible in the first place to keep my family's monthly plan, get a BB, and just pay like $30, whatever the rate is, extra for the internet? Because the entire package is at least $60 and that would mean extra money for talk + text which my family's plan already has. I wouldn't want my parents to break me off from the family plan and pay so much for an individual plan just so I can get a blackberry.

It's a very simple question really, since I'm not tech-savvy at all, in other words in switching from a dumbphone to a BB would I have to get a completely new voice plan or could I just pay an extra fee for the data.

I ask because in my research, people keep saying a data plan is required for BB's and that it is $30 a month for unlimited (other times people say its as low as $10 or $20???), but on the T-Mobile website there's only an option for the entire package, minutes, texting, and everything, not an internet add-on to a different T-Mobile non-smartphone plan, for $59.99 for only 200mb.

Look at T-Mobile's web page and/or call the 1-800 customer service number. On our contract, the BlackBerry data plans are add-on on top of the voice plan. But I don't know how things have changed. (We've been on the same contact for 5 or 6 years, and the BlackBerry data is 19.95 or 19.99 USD on each line.). If things haven't changed, you could simply add the BlackBerry data plan to your line. But there may be less costly options if there is a package you could switch to.
