Im a newb and an older guy, so if my question sounds silly or is something "everyone knows", I apologize in advance. Im thinking about getting my first Blackberry and i have a question. I live in dead spot for cell phone reception, but my friend told me I could use the Blackberry through my WiFi (Verizon Fios Wireless Router) to not only access the internet, but make phone calls with the Blackberry. Is this true? I would like to get rid of my landline and just use the blackberry, but if i can't make calls through wifi, its a no go for me. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

You really should talk to your cell carrier to get the real story. Your friend may use a different cell company and device than you and therefore would have different features.

Verizon does offer SKYPE via internet on selected phones, not sure which though. That might or might not be an option in your situation. I do not know of a true VoIP solution however. ATT offers a Microcell which routes voice over the Internet to a tower and then out to the network for their customers (for $150.00). I think Verizon has a similar offering. Again a call to them or a visit to a corporate store would be in order.

In any case, you would need a BB data plan.

Just to add that the Skype BlackBerry application does not currently work over WiFi.

Verizon Wireless does offer a microcell or femtocell to customers in areas with spotty coverage. Talk with a Corporate store rep. or maybe a tech. for more info and you do need a broadband connection to make it work.

Welcome to the group, fsfty42.

Be sure and see the FAQ and tips links in Dub's signature... those are musts for a newbie. Pay particular attention to the articles on data plans, and what you'll need a blackberry data plan for to do.

Good luck!

A simple VoIP client like fgVoIP might work. Especially if only used in WiFi. I don't see why not.

fsfty42: What's your device Model? if it is a 8520,8900,9000 or 97000 you can try our client and let us know if it worked. The app isn't free but you can try it and if you don't like it or if it doesn't work just delete it. It doesn't mess anything (as far as we know!).
