Default What does network locked mean?

Basically I want to know if a phone which has O2 or Orange logo on the front can be used with a Vodafone SIM card?
I hope this makes sense as I am signed up to Vodafone and always have been regardless of which phone I have owned.
I now have a BB 9000 Bold which is faulty and am putting it right although I need a few spare parts.
I want to buy another one as spares just in case (probably from ebay) which may be for another network. If I get that one working, can I use it for Vodafone even though it may be O2 or other?
Thanks

As long as you don't change the main board of the device, you won't have to worry about the network lock.
