Help I was given a BB 8100 as a gift and would like to use it. However when I put my sim in it says invalid sim so I assume I need to unlock it, however I have no idea who the carrier is that it is locked too, how do I find out? When I reboot all it says is blackberry. Its a black and silver model with a silver bottom piece below the keys.

Go to optios and look for the about. This should give you the model number and the operating system. As to which carrier it is locked, I really can't help you sice the device is unbranded, but I'm sure some of the other guys might be able to help.

Press ALT + CAP + H to bring up the Help Screen.

Its because I work a ways away from work so I had a coworker do this for me and well he isn't what I would call 100% reliable.

If it is ATT it means it's GSM and you can use on GSM carriers once unlocked. For fast unlocking see the link in my signature and you get a discount for being a BBF member to boot!

Which carrier do you want to use the device on? It won't work on a CDMA network like Sprint or Verizon if it is ATT.

I wanted to use it for ATT but got a invalid SIM notice, reloaded the software from ATT, and I read that it needed to be unlocked which puts me where I am now. Fun stuff...

Using the advanced internet search tool Google (Google) I quickly determined that vendor ID 160 is Dobson.

Unhappy

Well just tried 2 unlock services and both are refunding my money because they are not able to unlock the phone. Any recommendations for a cable unlock? Is this something I can do myself?

Did you try the vendor in my signature?

No I did not, I went with another recommendation, should I try a code unlock again before attempting a cable or just save the money and go cable?

I don't get this, the OP starts a thread, and two of the initial replies to him BOTH have links and recommendations to Horizon Wireless for unlocking... even with a discount.

And he goes with someone else's recommendation.

Why would he take our advice about anything else?
