I did this in the past on my Pearl. I just went in and cleared my logs and then went to options and pressed Menu to Hide all types. Did I do it correctly?

When everyone is talking about memory, are these the figures coming right off the Options > Status screen?

If so, I have 17.8 MB left, so that should be OK.

But it says total is 54.9 MB. Isn't this supposed to be 64 MB, or is this the space left after the OS loads?

I would hope it is this, as it would seem that is what it should be. I honestly am not sure. I would have still liked to see the full amount like the other models.

Question alt + l g l g

I just took a look at that page and it said event log (warning) on top. Then there was one line in bold
(Name: net.rim.srp) along with a couple of lines that had "bad" in them. I'm wondering what the bold line meant and if it is a good idea to clear and turn logging to off since maybe these logs are supposed to be a record for troubleshooting purposes? (I am guessing here since I've never been asked to access these logs by t-mo reps or anyone else when troubleshooting.)

My file free shows: 10789613 Bytes free.

I have installed: Google Talk 2.x, MS Live search, Beyond411, Google Maps, TeleNav, Mapquest Navigator, Viigo, Google Mail App, Opera Mini 4 Beta, BeamBerry, along with the normal 8320 OS stuff, and 5 extra games. I am running the O2 today theme that was unlocked using the BlackBerry.alx file. That was the only theme I loaded to the device using the edit, I didn't load the others so they wouldn't take up space on the device.

I have zero issues with losing call logs or messages, perhaps I'm not seeing them, but I retain 30 days of messages and 30 days of call logs. Anything beyond that I can get at from my t-mobile account page, and my webmail accounts. Are people seeing random deletes or does it start with the oldest entries?

I also do the ALT + L G L G to clear my log files when the device starts to feel sluggish, I've turned logging off before, but the device still seems to slow down and even clearing an empty log screen seems to speed it up. So now I leave the logging on and delete as needed, but I've only done so for speed issues. I perform that perhaps once a week or so, but not very often.

ADDED:
Also, just cleared my log files and free file jumped to: 10865093 Bytes.
Looks like there was about 80K there to be had by clearing them. That's alot of space for text storage.

Just had a thought, if you are losing logs and such, do you have content compression turned on? Options -> Security -> General Settings: Content Compression.

Doubtful. Did you see this 8Mb increase after a battery pull? The battery pull likely freed most of the memory. The logs don't use anywhere near that much memory.

Yea every battery pull gives me 10mb back.. I wonder what is holding that much memory up.

I don't know how big my logs were, but I got almost 6MB more room just by erasing them with no battery pull. Literally, status: 13MB free, clear log, check status: 19MB free.

They really do log a lot of stuff. I tried emailing the current day's worth to count the lines and it cut off the email not even an hour back. That was without any calls and just some light web browsing and maybe 3 emails coming in.

I've never cleared my logs on the 8320. I looked at the memory earlier, cleared the logs, and there was no change in memory.

Anyone check their content compression settings? I have mine on and haven't had any data loss problems.

Doesn't the BB have RAM as well as Flash? Not sure which we're talking about here, but I'd expect a battery pull to flush RAM, and then RAM may be "consumed" by data which quite legitimately stays there cached to keep things faster.

For what it's worth, I've found simply clearing the browser's cache periodically helps speeds things up a lot and free memory. Do so also seems to force the BB to 'clean' it's memory too...

Browser | Options | Cache Operations | Content Cache [Clear]

Mind you don'y clear anything else you want to keep in there, like your passwords, cookies etc.

I check my alt e-a-c-e twice a day and have not noticed a memory change substantial.

I am betting it is a third party app that is the problem.

What is alt e a c e ?

Something else I did--Go into Media, Options, and change "Reserved Pictures Memory" from 2MB or 5MB to zero (assuming you have your pics on a card like me). I saw an immediate add back to free memory of the 2MB that was released.....
