I think on the new OS the application is controlled by a Service Book which is going to make it very difficult. If you look for the the thread on making Yahoo Messenger work on ATT it will be that kind of process to get it loaded.

I think everyone should be aware that making changes to the LBS.alx file will cause unwanted reactions from the address book..

My address book was working fine prior to this change. That is, I could edit an address book entry on my 8820, click the ball, then save.. The Edit window would close and the addresses would display.

After I made the change to the LBS.alx file, I tried to edit a contact. When I clicked the ball, then save, I got the infamous "Address Updated Externally" dialog

I think this has something to do with the fact that changing the LBS.alx file installs net_rim_bb_lbs_internal_gps.cod on the phone.

I think this is what is causing the error "Address Updated Externally."

Like I said, it was not doing this prior to changing the LBS.alx file and I did not install any other software.

Welcome to BBF. I doubt that it's t he edit to the LBS.alx file causing this. More likely it's an issue with connecting it to the Desktop Manager and any sync settings that might have inadvertantly got added or changed.

I would tend to agree with you. However, I spent an hour on the phone with BB tech support.. We wiped the device - including all apps - and installed the OS from scratch. After this was completed I synced my addresses, etc.

I was able to edit numerous addresses from my device with no problems. Next, and without installing any new apps, I changed the LBS.alx file and re-synced.

the BBMaps icon appeared, but, when attempted to edit an address and save, I received the "Address updated externally" message.

I wonder if it has to do with the "map it" or "drive it" options in the address book. I'm grasping at straws here, though. I don't have BBMaps anymore but I think those were options with BBMaps installed.

Interesting.. I'll have to go through the process again tomorrow to see if this is surely the issue: changing the .alx file

so i am paying 10 bux a month for the "GPS" service from ATT. does BBmaps eliminate the need to spend the extra 10 bux?

how does it compare to telenav?

BBMaps is different than TeleNav. Telenav gives you voice prompted turn by turn directions. BBMaps has not voice prompts and just gives you a route on a map. Also, AT&T doesn't support BBMaps but you can easily make it work on the 8310 if you are using OS 4.2.

No, you are paying $9.99/month for TeleNav (AT&T Nav).

BBMaps is quite difficult to use lately as it now required a Service Book to load the application and enable the mapping.

You might be better off with GoogleMaps, LiveSearch or Nav4All, AmazeGPS, etc., all with info in this GPS section.

Hi ,

Does this mean getting BB Maps on blackberry 8110 is difficult, as it is running 4.3 OS ? Does anybody got the BBMaps on 8110 ?

I have a bold on AT&T with desktop manager 4.7. I dont see the Shared directory within the research in motion folder.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Common

The common folder doesn't exist.

I have AppLoader, Auto Update, BBBI Drivers, BBWebSLLauncher, Modem Drivers, RIMDEviceManager, and USB Drivers.

I talked to both ATT and RIM about this. ATT&T originally denied that they disabled BB Maps, which is untrue. They cripple your OS by not letting you use that application, and encourage you to use their fee based alternative.

RIM concedes this is true, and admit while they're not happy about it, as they feel they've made a nice map application, there is nothing they, or we, can do. Carriers are allowed to modify certain parts of the OS, like disabling BB Maps. In fact, if you read the IT white paper on BB Maps, it states that an IT dept. has this capability to enable or disable at their choosing.

This affects developers also, who have written applications that are intended to work with Blackberry Maps in some way, and now find their apps will not function. If you update OS 4.2 to OS 4.5, and have BB Maps, is is probably the old version of Maps, 1.2, not version 4.5.

Blackberrys acquired from ATT should come encased in a prophylactic to prevent carrier violation.

Will this BB Os below work to get BB Maps On my Black Berry 8310. Also , 8310 download 4.5.0 already seems to have the threads removed , is that correct?

I just updated the first post. This method doesn't work on OS 4.3 and higher devices as RIM fundamentally changed how BBMaps works.

So does that mean that if you have OS 4.3 and higher you cannot get BB Maps to work? I loved having BB Maps before I upgraded the OS (using the outstanding work-around found on this website) -- but I don't want to downgrade the OS just to get it back. I've tried everything else suggested on this site to try to get BB Maps to work, but to no avail. There must be some way to foil AT&T and re-gain access to RIM's great BB Maps program, right?!
