Default Track Ball "fix" - is this B.S.?

Please Login to Remove!

Over the weekend, on a business trip (wonderful timing), my track ball stopped working left and right.

It would go up and down, but not left-right. It started working again yesterday on my way home from my trip. I went to the Verizon store where I bought the phone (about two months ago), and a salesman told me that this was a "known issue", and that the fix was to increase the sensitivity of the trackball. So, he adjusted my sensitivity to 90%, and said I shouldn't have any more problems.

Does this sound right? I know there are left-right issues with the trackball, but is this the fix?

Gone, the 9630 is known to have issues moving left, I think. There are many posts here in this section about it.

Adjusting the sensitivity is a band-aid, not a fix. Early model 9630's had a manufacturing defect which causes this issue.
The device needs to be replaced.

A properly operating trackball does not need any sensitivity corrections. I run mine at the default 70 and it's fine. Yours will probably continue to malfunction. There have been many suggestions to try software fixes, but really it appears to be an initial batch of bad hardware.

If you can trade it in (within 30 days - or convince them it's defective), make sure you get the most recently made phone that they have. Most of the assembly problems have been fixed.

I had my Tour replaced last week for the 2nd time because of the trackball issue. This one works perfect. Overall the keyboard and the TB have a much better feel than the previous phones. If you are with VZ, they have a 1 yr guarantee, so they should replace it. Bought my original in July, so I am long past the 30 days.

My trackball functions better than it did with the first build but it is still a weakness of the device hardware.

Mine did not work properly out of the box. It is a manufacturing issue. The silver washer that holds the track ball in place was partially popped out. I pushed it back in place and my trackball has worked fine since. I have done the same thing with a friend's which fixed it but he has started having problems again and the washer is pushed down properly.

I do not know what you mean by extended warranty for these devices?
Do you have insurance through verizon?

Just spoke to the verizon rep for our company, this is a known issue and they have trackball "kits" at verizon wireless company stores. you can also call the support line (we use the biz support line) to get a replacement shipped.
