So, he adjusted my sensitivity to 90%, and said I shouldn't have any more problems.
Does this sound right? I know there are left-right issues with the trackball, but is this the fix?

A properly operating trackball does not need any sensitivity corrections. I run mine at the default 70 and it's fine. Yours will probably continue to malfunction. There have been many suggestions to try software fixes, but really it appears to be an initial batch of bad hardware.
If you can trade it in (within 30 days - or convince them it's defective), make sure you get the most recently made phone that they have. Most of the assembly problems have been fixed.
