When it is released by RIM, it should work. All current devices of the 8xxx series will receive OS 4.5. Only the 8707 will not get OS 4.5.

thank you. I just found the 4.5 beta for 8320. Do you know if it will work on the 8300?

When changing the OS (updating) can you do a restore for apps and data or do you need to start fresh with the new OS?

The upgrade of the OS will ask you to backup and restore. A wise person would do that separately and apart from the upgrade, just in case something goes awry, and then you absolutely have a good back up, from which to restore.
