Default Lack of BES = Deal Breaker

Please Login to Remove!

I have been researching the Storm & Bold for a while now. The more I research the more I am inclined towards picking up the Bold.
  • BES - The lack of BES support during the first 2 weeks. This is a deal breaker.
  • AT&T's 3G Network - I have been using AT&T and the network is rather bleak. I have had a Verizon Aircard and the coverage has been great
  • Multitasking - i.e., Talking & Surfing. I struggle with the Storm not having this functionality.
  • Speed - I played with a Verizon Storm yesterday. The Verizon Rep couldnt tell me if it was preproduction or the real one

The only thing going for Storm is the Verizon Network and the Screen :(

It's important to remember that the device was just released and no matter how much people want it to be perfect, it's not going to be.

1) If BES functionality is really a problem, I'm willing to bet that it'll be resolved quickly. Where is this even sourced from besides the mortgage broker article? (Not trying to be confrontational, I'm honestly curious)
2) I'm not sure what point you're making here. Why does this make you want to pick up a Bold if you enjoy VZW's network?
3) Well, that's a definite point for the Bold and GSM 3G.
4) Again, device was JUST RELEASED - even the GSM version. OS fixes will more than likely be on the way soon to fix little bugs here and there. Reps are generally not known for their extreme knowledge of a device.

I thoght EVDO Rev A (which the storm supports) does allow for this...

Until I have one in hand I can't confirm... and of course, it will depend on VZW's coverage being Rev A in your area.

Has your extensive research turned up any details on "the BES problem"?

The only things I have read suggest that the problem is purely on Vodafone. Nothing to do with the Storm or RIM. So, as long as Verizon doesn't botch things in the U.S., there should be no issue with the Storm and BES here.

Do you know something different?

Default BES Issue

For the BES issue, I have called my Verizon Rep. He said they were having some trouble with BES and no more.

Additionally, I asked the BES team at my company confirm with Verizon and their response was "Verizon failed to get the BlackBerry team a test device that can work with the BES prior to launch". This could mean a couple of different things 1) Verizon didnt want to give them a device prelaunch or that the current version doesnt work.

Finally, the posting on the Mortgage site and the reponses on this website about BES make me believe that there is a problem with BES integration.

I found this article online today about the BES situation.

BlackBerry Storm is a little too consumer for some • The Register

It looks like it will be resolved soon, and maybe it will be available out of the box from Verizon, but it DOES seem to be an issue.

I too would like to know where you sourced this info. As far as BES not working, that doesn't sound right. They would not release the phone if BES didn't work.

I would think ATT 3g network being bleak would cause you to WANT to use the storm on VZW.

Talking and surfing? You can't do this simultaneously? I don't remember reading that anywhere.

Speed... you talking about how quickly the phone executes tasks? speed of the 3g? typing speed? not really sure what you are referring to.

That article is extremely vague.

That's quite a bit going for it I'd say.

I was at a Microsoft Mobile seminar today and there were two Storms that Verizon employees had. They definately were BES provisioned. No lag that I saw either.

Hard to believe that any RIM device wouldn't work with BES.

Works just fine with my BES.

Other than RIM's up down outage this am in the Southeast. They say its a Low Priority but its effect Verizon, ATT and Tmobile.

But when RIM is up its working great just as fast as my Bold on my desk too.

On the BES would you have to update the device.xml? or is that just for software pushes?
