Angry Data Plan vs Data Plan

Please Login to Remove!

I have a Blackberry data pack plan on my BB at a stupid cheap price. I have been having problems with my Tour and Sprint was going to upgrade me to the 9650 for free or move to the HTC Evo (still had to pay the $199). When I got to the store to make the switch I was told I needed to change my plan to a Everything data or Everything Family plan which was going to raise my plan another $40 to $50 per mo. Has anyone heard of this or is Sprint giving me the run around. How can a BB Tour work fine but a 9650 needs a new plan.

Thanks

I believe thats because you are on what is known as a "grandfathered" plan; if you were to upgrade you are moved to their new priced plan.

Yup. That's Sprint's policy. If you upgrade, even from a damaged/defective device, you have to upgrade to the correct plan for that new device.

Not a good policy.

Sometimes Sprint's policies seem almost suicidal. They've been struggling for customers for several years now, yet they enact the most customer-unfriendly policies. Somewhere along the line they decided it was time to draw a line in the sand and enforce it with an iron fist. Maybe their economic desperation lead them to believe that was the only way to turn things around. For years they had the most lenient policies and empowered the customer service reps to practically give the store away. So now they've gone in the complete opposite direction, and seemingly overnight. I guess it's just tough for folks to swallow, coming so quickly after a decade of laxness with the rules.

But consistent with policies of other US carriers - AT&T does this for sure, and so (I think) does Verizon. This is why I'm still using a 4 year old Samsung WinMo phone with broken buttons - my data package is $15/month all in. Getting a new phone will cost me ~$20 to upgrade and +$25/month for the "correct" data plan.

I thought I read somewhere that if you have the unlimited data plan with AT&T and you change phones (even going to an iPhone) you can keep it. You would not be required to go to one of the new limited plans.

Blackberry to IPhone is a plan change.
