Default BlackBerry Browser vs. Internet Browser

Please Login to Remove!

Ok everyone, I would like to open up this discussion with my observations, and then let it blossom in to pros and cons of the two. Hopefully it will be useful to everyone in the long run.

I have noticed that on my 8320 that if I set my default browser to Internet Browser, it never using my wi-fi connnection with I try to browse the Internet, it always uses GRPS/EDGE. However, the BlackBerry Browser on the other hand will use my wi-fi connection to do browsing and if there is none then it will use the GPRS/EDGE service.

Here are my questions and hopefully meat for discussion:

Is it that the Internet Browser ONLY uses the carrier service?
Is the Internet Browser more efficient and faster?

thats pretty odd now that you brought it up. i never used 8320 browsing through wifi before, i did however tested on both 8220 and 8120. regardless if its IE or BB browser, i was able to browse with wifi only.

i just got a 8320, i will test it out later today and find out about that.

BB browser will use the wifi connection only if you change the "Default Browser" to "Hotspot Browser". I have .102 installed so the verbiage of the non internet browser might be a little bit different on your hand held. Once you do this and save, BB browser will expect an active wifi connections before you can do some browsing.

That still doesn't explain the original question. Plus a "hotspot" browser? Come on!!! Dumbest thing that I've heard all day.

Not sure how it is with the WiFi models but typically:

Blackberry Browser connects via BES/MDS
Browser/Internet Browser does not
WAP Browser/Carrier-named Browser is for WAP

My understanding is that the WiFI models have added the Hotspot Browser.

Ok, so if I follow on what takeshi is saying it would mean appear that if you have a wifi device and use BES/MDS then your best bet is the BlackBerry Browser, as that browser can sense the different connections and use the faster of the two. That would also mean that if you're on a BIS plan, then buying a wifi device would not be beneficial to you then as you would not be able to browser the Internet via wifi.

Would it be safe to say then that other applications would behave the same way as I have noticed that I was able to do my googletalk and yahoo messenger, when I was having issues with my BlackBerry browser, so I'm guess that it was using the Internet Browser "function" at that time, there are also times that I would be connected via wifi and get a quick loading of my google maps as oppose to when I'm not on wifi.
