Question 8830 stops receiving email

Please Login to Remove!

VZQ 8830, 4.5.0.160 on BES. Prior to the upgrade I had no problem, but now it occassionally stops receiving all email, BES and gmail. Everything on the device looks fine, but unless I do a battery pull there won't be any new mail coming in

Help please

Wirelessly posted (Its All About the U!)

I don't know much about BES but if there are service books, go to your email settings and resend. You may need to downgrade.

Call your helpdesk / BESAdmin and tell this to them. Note the times mail flow stops and when you do a battery pull.

Since I also stopped receiving Gmail, I assume its a phone problem ,not the BES server. Make sense?

Yes, it does sound like a phone / carrier issue. I'd start with a PRL update first ... dial: *22899

I don't really know what PRL is, but I did it and got a successful activation message. What did I just do? and how do I know if it worked? (patience and time are required)

The successful activation message is a good sign. The PRL update refreshes all possible network connections on Verizon devices. The real test of the fix will be if you start recieving your e-mails again.

You attempted to update your cell phone carrier tower preference.

Phone scoop has a better definition - phonescoop.com/glossary/term.php?gid=11

If you stop receiving emails again check the upper right corner on the phone. In order to receive mobile data (emails, internet browsing, etc. on Verizon) you should see 1XEV or 1X. If you see a lowercase 1x or 1xev you have no mobile data connection.

I have had a similar experience on my 8830 running 4.5.0.138 on VZW. Does this happen to your phone after you've been on a call? It seems to happen most to me when I have transitioned cell towers while on a call. When I get off, all data service is lost. However, I still have 1XEV listed and no "data connection refused" message. The browser, maps and email are all hosed up. I have to toggle the radio on and off to get it to work. Occasionally, if I wait a period of time (30 minutes? More?) it will work. However, usually I will need to use the device so a quick toggle works. Does this sound similar to your problem?

I am embarassed to say that when I realized I wasn't getting email I didn't do anything but a battery pull. I never looked at the signal strength, browser, maps or tried cycling the radio. Hopefully it won't happen again, but I'll investigate more if it does

By the way, this also happens to me when I go in the subway (no service) and come out on the other side - always homed to a different tower.

I should note that calls are fine - I can receive calls and send them no problem. Text messaging is also OK.

If:
1) *22899
and
2) OS reload

doesn't fix it, you've got a problem with your device ... get it replaced.

Spoke to Verizon technical support today (this agent was very competent). He resent services books, reauthorized something and we did a battery pull. He said if it fails again we're going to wipe it and reload. If that doesn't do it, they'll replace it.

I suspect none of the software things will fix it, but it's worth a try.

i have this type of issue before, it's either been service book issues (BES Admin can resend them) or dock with PC and use Desktop Manager to assist.

Alternative is to wipe the handheld and either rebuild on the BES again, or update the OS and then add back to the BES - having done all that and it still gives this loss of service/mail, as Hdawg says, replace the handset.

There is no such a function / need on a GPRS network.

Try updating the OS on your device!

I was considering the OS upgrade but am wary that some programs I use will no longer function, such as Telenav, bbweather, and bbtracker.

Wirelessly posted (banana)

Wuss. I'd be VERY surprised if the apps didn't work after an os upgrade.
