Default Niagara Simultaneous Voice and Data?

Please Login to Remove!

I currently have a 8830 WE and one of the big drawbacks for me is no support for simultaneous data and voice. Will the Niagara on Verizon Wireless support simultaneous data and voice? Is there a reason the 8830 doesn't support this currently? I thought 3G devices were specifically able to do this.

Yes, I believe the 8900, 9000 and Storm (in some cases) will handle this.

The 8830 is not on a true 3G (3G is just a generic term for 'higher' or faster bandwidth).

Well it's EVDO, and I thought EVDO had that capability - maybe that's too generic? EVDO Rev A is the technology that brings that capability?

Scratch the 8900, it not a "true" 3G, that's what we are getting the 9630 I beleive.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the "3g" Storm is EVDO RevA (Vzn) and I don't think that it can do simultaneous voice/data like the true 3g Bold (att) can. Am I wrong here?

As I understand it the only way to do voice and data at the same time is to have 2 seperate radio's ie a 3g radio and a GSM radio.
3g does the data, GSM does the data.
Not sure about the US CDMA stuff though?

EVDO (Rev anything) does not allow for simultaneous voice & data. It is just not possible. When in a data session, it will be suspended until the call is finished.

Damn, this is enough of a reason to get me to switch to AT&T - there are some good Applications coming out that make meetings on the go much better.

Cool, but I'm not spending 2k on a phone that can be shut off :(

I wonder if Kevin from CB.com got that one to, like he did his Bold LOL.

I am a bit upset that us CDMA users can not do simultaneous data/voice.. Darn.

I can send emails and have a voicecall at same time, but only when i have an active wifi connection, which makes sence.

Yes, and with VZW blocking WiFi, it hurts just a little bit more. However, I'm particularly looking at the WebEx iPhone application. You know they're going to have to release that for the Blackberry as well. When they do, it looks like CDMA users will be left in the dark.

I've been using it on my iTouch (with WiFi only of course) and it's the first time I've actually wanted an iPhone - it's a killer app for my business.

Cisco WebEx on the iPhone
Cisco WebEx Press Release for Future Development

I did some Googling and found the link above from Cisco, announcing the application for the Storm - any idea how they're going to do voice and data on the Storm? Maybe there's hope yet for CDMA users!

There is some misinformation in this thread and I wanted to clear it up.

EVDO REV. 0 and REV. A are both considered 3g wireless technologies. EVDO REV. 0 cannot support voice and data simultaneously because of it's low upstream capabilities and latency, this is why they have REV. A.

REV A. can support VOIP and thus do data and voice at the same time (Sprint kind of already is with QCHAT). This is something that Verizon or Sprint has to allow though as it will put significant more traffic on their EVDO networks.

The only CDMA Blackberry device even capable of doing voice and data at the same time currently is the Blackberry Storm. Rumor has it that Sprint and Verizon will both be supporting voice and data at the same time as they continue to beef up their REV A. coverage and networks.

Actually a device like the 8900 can also do voice and data simultaneously, it requires the carrier to support a feature called DTM, TIM or vodafone in italy support the feature, but there are few others that do.

Rev. A. Will upgrade to Rev B. LTE will begin rolling out late '09. LTE is on 700MHz making it possible for both voice and data at the same time without using VoIP. However VoIP is the future of all networks GSM/CDMA and WiMax.

Don't we have to wait for all the analog tv signals to be shut off first?

I beleive that works as 700 MHz..

Of couse that keeps gettings delayed lol.

Correct, and since VZ and everyone is conducting Trials, they can't plan to go full scale or begin using the airwaves till June when they will finally shut that spectrum off.

once that's done, and when VZ goes live sometime in 2010/2011 then we'll be rolling in 4G goodness, which should definitely offer simultaneous voice/data!

anyways, its as usual, always a waiting game.. -.-
