Hi there.

I have had a Blackberry 8530 since last April. After having it for a couple of months I ran an update for it through the Desktop Manager, all seemed to download/install fine. Then a couple of days ago I tried doing another update, this time there was a lot, 384 files to be downloaded. They downloaded with no problem, but when I prompted for them to be installed, after several minute I got a warning saying nothing could be installed because of a "fatal error"! It then said to try installing again, and I have now tried this 3 times with the same "fatal error" warning. I'm not sure what's causing this "error" or how I can possibly resolve the problem...Any help if possible, would be greatly appreciated.

Also, whenever I plug my phone into the computers USB slot, I though I could go to "My Computer" and open the drive that the phone would be in (Removable Disk J), but it keeps saying to insert a disk into it, as if it's not reading the phone! I wanted to open this to add a ringtone that i had created, but now because of this I'm not sure how I can do this? Again, any help would be very much appreciated.

So at this point the blackberry is ok? It boots, and so forth? The problem seems confined to the computer?

If so...

Are you using the same computer you've been using? Same USB cable? Anything different? Are you perhaps now using a different USB port than before, such as a hub, or connection on a keyboard or monitor?

Does the computer detect the blackberry when you connect it?

Have you done any troubleshooting on the USB on the computer? Have you tested with other devices such as an MP3 player or something?

Thanks for the reply aiharkness, and thanks Dubdub for moving the post, I wasn't too sure where to put it originally.

Well after making sure the USB cable and USB ports I use work properly, I've just this minute finished a Desktop Software upgrade (to 6.0.0.43) which seemed to work fine. Then I tried the software updates again, that had been giving the "fatal error" message, they now seem to have updated and installed fine.

As for installing/uploading a ringtone to the phone, after the update and upgrades it now appears that I can open the "J disk" and see the folders files etc.

So it looks like everything is now working okay again.
