I only have the T-Mobile 4.2.2.180 and my replies to HTML emails coming from Outlook are received as HTML (formatting is intact) in Outlook as well--they don't show up as plain text like before. So I'm not sure what that is but I like it.

I sure hope the carriers don't accept 4.5.0.37. If they do and more people load it over here, we will have a LOT of fried sim cards.
We should be getting this BIS 2.5 update in North America this weekend.

A friend of mine on a business trip to US yesterday. He has a Chinamobile branded 8700 (finally, chinamobile starts selling now) which is connected to his company's BES running Lotus domino. His BB was working fine before he left China and he also enable BB roaming feature before his departure. However, once he landed in San Diego yesterday, his BB only showed lower case edge, meaning not connected to RIM server. After lengthy troubleshooting with tech support in Chinamobile, they still didn't have the solution for him. He also did pull battery and resent service book as I suggested him to do, no luck. Do you think it has something to do with the outage in Asia since he is roaming from that area? Basically, will a roaming BES user be affacted by a BIS upgrade/outages in his home region? Thanks a lot.

I don't believe that would affect his capturing an EDGE signal.
An outage in the AsiaPacific area could affect his receipt of BES mail, however.

Thanks for the quick reply, JSanders! I kinda figured that is the reason too. Correct me if I am wrong, although BES users have their BB connected to an dedicated company server, the data still has to go through their carrier's backbone/server before reach RIM's side. Therefore, outage which causes carriers side outage will definitely affect both BIS and BES users.
Thanks again, JS!

I do believe so (the data route, if I follow it the same as you).
Now that said, seen any US-West Coast outages posted today, there could be something local for sure. But there are enough SF users that someone would be saying something is lengthy or widespread.

Actually, if there is an outage between the BES and RIM then any BES connected BB will be hit. This was most likely the issue. So, an Asia outage on an Asia BES will hit the handheld even if the handheld is in North America.
This happened to me during the big outage a year ago April. I was in Europe and the unexpected outage was in North America. My BB was hit but European BB's were unaffected.

But would that effect the EDGE signal? I understand it affecting the receipt and sending of mail, but what about the actual tower signal he shows?

Yes. When I was in Europe and the North American connection went down, I lost my EDGE to edge/GSM. Other local users didn't have the problem.

But is that true that "edge" means you are connected to carrier's mobile network at EDGE speed, but you are not connected to RIM server for data? Thanks.

That's correct. EDGE means you're connected to RIM data.

I only know cuz it happened to me during that big outage that made the news. It sucked because I was on a trip and really needed my BB, too. It happened when I woke up over there and we were heading back across the atlantic that afternoon.
