got an update from rogers. they will be upgrading all users to BIS 2.0 by the end of year which comes with better spam protection. they can delete the default email if i want but i have created filters in my web client and no more spam.

the default filter is not to forward emails to bb, and just one filter that checks for my secret email address and forward to bb.

Hmm. You got spam with cingular? Me too and it sucks. I called them and they asked me to forward the email to them.I did and I don't know what they did if anything at all but I am no longer getting them.

All new customers automatically are on BIS 2.0 and existing customers who want to upgrade to BIS 2.0 can call the data department to have the change made. In the new year BIS 1.8 users should get a pop up message or something along those lines asking them if they want to upgrade (or so I was told by the data dept a couple months back when I called in to upgrade to BIS 2.0)

I started getting spam tonight at my rogers.blackberry.net account which really pissed me off. I've been fortunate to have been spam free all these years when it came to my BlackBerry but alas the spam has started

Maybe a stupid question, but how do people send you emails if they don't have your blackberry email address?

Because I have been getting nothing but spam for three months now. I have my @mac.com account sent to my BB. I have never used my BB email account.

Sorry, I'm new.

I doubt that is going to help, it appears that somehow the address have been leaked or simply guessed. Guessing would be really easy to do if blackberry.net returns address unkown messages. Send out a couple of thousand messages and wait for the unkowns to bounce. Any that don't bouce are considred good.

I hate getting spam on my rogers.blackberry.net account. If this keeps up I think I may just cancel the account. The spam filters on my other email account work well and no spam is delivered to my device.

I've been told that most of these spams don't have your actual BIS email address in the "to" field. If that's the case a simple filter in your BIS account will stop those. Simply create a filter that says if the "to" field does not include "your email address here" do not forward mail to the handheld.

I went to my Cingular BIS site to create this filter and but "does not include" is not an option on the drill down. Any suggestions?

Ok...my bad-sorry. Create a filter that says if the "To" field contains "xxxx@.tmo.blackberry.net/xxxx@mycingular.blackberry.net" etc. send messages to handheld. Then set tell it when no filters apply do not send messages to handheld. Be sure to do this in the .mycingular/.tmo email address

Default RIM hacked?

Is it possible a RIM PC or PCs have been compromised, allowing a hacker access to all device email addresses? I have been a Blackberry user for 20 months and I never got 1 spam email until last week.

1. They guess it. Spammers send 1,000,000 emails to different addresses, by the law of big numbers some of them are valid addresses.
2. You asked Web site to forward interesting article to your friend. You gave your friend's email address to Web site. This site sold it to marketers.
3. Your friend's computer got virus. Virus emailed his address book to spammers. His address book had your email address.

There are many more ways to harvest email addresses.

I am giving this a try. I also added another rule for c.c.

hope this works. I would delete the address but it ticks me off that I have to do that.

Don't do anything drastic like deleting/changing your BB email addresses yet. RIM and the individual providers are probably working on the issue and may have a fix soon.

> what does a firewall have to do with spam?

A firewall won't stop spam.

I haven't gotten any yet on my BB. I have a yahoo account and most of the spam is dumped into my bulk mail folder and the good stuff goes to my yahoo inbox and BB. No spam on my blackberry.mycingular.net email account either.
