Default GPS Locating via Phone Number

Please Login to Remove!

This girl at my work says her husband can locate where she is using his cellphone, simply by plugging her cell phone number in to this program/application. She has a Blackberry Curve, and he doesn't have a BB at all. Does anybody know what this application is or if there are any other ones that allow you to locate somebody (that DO NOT have GPS on their phone) simply by putting in a cell phone?? What are some free programs that do use GPS to locate somebody that are NON BB cell phones??

Well with a fairly limited degree of accuracy you can use cell tower triangulation. Its how google maps locates you without GPS. As for locating and tracking it would have to be some type of app installed on the berry. TeleNavtrack had an app that tacked via cell towers and you can remotely view the breadcrumb trail. It didn't use gps at all and once started ran in the background. He might have hidden the icon and thus hid most traces of the program.

Is there a program maybe just online where you would go online and plug in their cell phone number and get the cell tower triangulation of that number - preferably free???

That I am unsure of. And I seriously doubt that would be that readily available. The invasion of privacy issues would be enormous. Personally I would call BS on the husband saying its phone number based. Then all someone would have to do is change numbers and it wouldn't work.

I don't think this is possible, without certain technology that is not readily available to the public.

All she would have to do is remove her battery from her phone and he would be stumped.

Ok, i guess this girl is trying to track her husband, she has a Voyager (which i believe has GPS) through Verizon Wireless. Her husband has a Motorola Q (which i don't think has GPS). Is there anyway to track him knowing this?

There is always more to the story, it seems.

Nope, not that I know of.

Oh! and my friend called her husband and found out he really GPSed himself and then BS'd her in to believing he GPSed her, to "prove" that he knows where she is at all times. Way to call that one Sith!! LOL

Verizon has 2 apps that do something similar. Field Force Manager(b2b) and Chaperone(consumer version). They can tell where the phone is if it is turned on. I've seen a demo on Field Force Manager and it was able to triangulate the position of a phone pretty accurately.

what is the point of an application like this?? i know the police / emergency vehicles have access too this for safety purposes. and they hae full access to GPS phones while on an emergency call, reguardless of the user setting.

BUT

as for general public use... i beg to differ.

i took the constitution a few years ago and passed ( a 96 i believe). i dont remember everything, but i do remember that we have a freedom of privacy. and i am pretty sure that that system would violate my civil liberties. so i stand in disbelief that this system will ever be available to the general public...

But doesn't the cell phone connect to signals crossing through public air using signals licensed to private and public companies by the Federal government? I am certainly not a constitutional expert, but it sure seems murky to me. If you don't want to possibly be tracked by a phone signal you should probably not have a cell phone.

I am really not sure what expectation you have to privacy. Eavesdropping on actual calls and call content? I would hope and believe yes. Personal data sent and received? Again I would hope yes. A signal that can tell the physical location of a device? I am just not sure....These are very intricate issues. Interesting too.

1. Did you read this thread you just posted in?

2. Please don't double post your question in the forum. Very bad manners.

There are online services that do tracking via cell phone. It's a cheaper, more discrete, but less accurate alternative to GPS tracking for bikers.
