I am looking at BB 9700 AWS (WIND Same as T-Mobile)

I am Barrie - WIND Away Zone. I really want to get and use Wind. Wondering how this would work, I have never had BB before.

I go any buy a Wind Bold Blackberry 9700, unlock, go to Rogers and get a Rogers SIM (Saving the Wind SIM for use later) and use the 2G/Edge Network.
WHAT differences would I notice aside from the Rogers charges? Would the speed be slower ?
Then when Wind comes to Barrie, I could just switch SIM and activate on Wind ?

Please let me know if this is how things would work. Any issues that I would watch for?

You can't use a WIND phone on Rogers network due to the AWS spectrum.

What are your reasons for going for WIND? Their away zone thing is a bit of a kick in the sack for most of the customers right now, they only have two small home zones at this time.

If your adamant about using WIND, you would have to wait until they have a home zone in your area, and then purchase one of their 9700 for 450 and use it on their network. Or you can pay their outrageous rates for being outside the 'home zone' until they are in your area.

I thought that the Wind Blackberry 9700 would pick up Roger's signal as Rogers Provides the away roaming. so if you put a Rogers SIM in then it would be your home network ?? What am I missing here ? Sorry to not understand this.

I agree the roaming rates for Wind customers is expensive on Rogers.

I understand where you are getting at, and it is a point that confuses me a bit too. I've been told two things, that WIND has been allowed to use Rogers network for roaming, but get a hard drop between towers where they have to restart calls.

But I've also been told due to the AWS spectrum their phones are manufactured for that network, and Rogers phones won't work. I hope someone else can put more info into this as to how this would be possible, I have just been told that's how it is.

You can use a Wind or T-Mobile USA 9700 with a Rogers SIM, but you will only get 2G service. Wind and T-Mobile USA use the 1700 MHz (AWS) frequency for 3G whilst Rogers uses 850/1900. I hope this clears it up.

Ahh thanks Dan! I thought it might have something to do with 2g and 3g.

So technically the OP could use the phone on Rogers network on a month to month voice and data plan, but will only get 2g speeds. Then could sign up with WIND when they expand their homezone. How would this affect voice by chance?

Correct. The voice service should be perfect. I know Rogers' GSM/GPRS/EDGE network is good.

What differences would I notice between 2G/Edge and 3G for data - the main use is for email which is the strength of BB. Would it still have all the features of BB available if I put the Blackberry data plan from Rogers. ? (I have learned from reading on this forum there is a difference between BB data and data plan).

With e-mail, you wouldn't notice any difference.

If you get a Rogers BlackBerry plan, all features will work.

Rogers does offer data plans on month to month as well, there is a 15 dollar one for personal email and blackberry messenger, then 25 for 500 mb, 30 for 1 gb and so on. Just make sure they add the BIS one instead of a regular dsp. It's not often an error like that occurs though, as long as you tell them the hardware, they can add it for you.

You may have to pay a 35 dollar activation fee though.
