Ok folks, I have no idea where to go with this one. We currently use two BlackBerry Models in our organization, the 8100 and the 8300. I'm trying to setup a Software configuration on our BES Server. I have installed the BlackBerry Software for both Devices and shared out the Research In Motion folder. When I create the software configuration I navigate to the shared folder and that's all fine. The problem is it is only detecting the software for the 8300, not the 8100. Any one have any thoughts? I even tried removing the 8300 software but that didn't help.

Gotta index the software configuration.

Task 1 - Index the software configuration

1. On the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared, create a folder, and name it applications. Note: If you are unable to create the applications folder on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, install the BlackBerry® Desktop Software.
2. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\applications, create a folder for the third-party application, and name it myapplication.
3. Copy the BlackBerry device installation files (the ALX and COD files) to the myapplication folder.
4. To index the applications listed in this directory, open a command prompt and type C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
5. Type Loader.exe /index and press Enter.
6. Share the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\ folder on the network as read-only.

Note: If you want to add new software to the indexed software list, run the Loader.exe /index command again in order for the software to be listed in the software configuration screen.

Task 2 - Create the software configuration

1. Complete one of the following options:
   • For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.0 and earlier, open the BlackBerry Handheld Configuration Tool and click the Configurations tab.
   • For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 and later, select the Software Configurations tab in BlackBerry Manager.
2. Click Add New Configuration from the Common tasks menu in the bottom-right pane.
3. Name the new configuration.
4. In the Handheld Software Location or Device Software Location field, specify the shared Research In Motion® directory, as described in step 6 of Task 1. All indexed software is listed under the Application Name section.
   Note: A local drive cannot be chosen for this step. Instead, use the \\servername\<sharename> format.
5. Click Policies and create a new policy called Disallowed.
6. In the Application Control Policy window, change the Disposition field to Disallowed and click OK.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 and create two more policies called Optional and Required. Change the Disposition field to Optional for the first policy, and Required for the second policy.
8. Click OK.
9. To the right of the Application Software header, click on the drop-down list and select the Disallowed policy. Note: This has disallowed all software from being installed on specified BlackBerry devices. Any restricted software that is currently installed on a BlackBerry device will be automatically removed by this software policy. To view all software that has been indexed, expand the Application Software header. At this point, it is possible to choose whether or not the listed software is required or optional.
10. Click OK to close the Handheld Software Configuration or Device Software Configuration screen.
11. In BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1, complete the following steps:
12. 1. Select the BlackBerry device user or the user group, and select Assign Software Configuration in the Tasks list under Device Management.
    2. On the Select a software configuration screen, select the software configuration and click OK.

Note: The software configuration will allow multiple BlackBerry device users to be selected when assigning the configuration. To select multiple BlackBerry device users, press the Ctrl key or Shift key.

Sorry, don't think I stated the problem clearly. The problem is not the application software part, it's the device software. Right now our 8100's are a few revisions behind on their OS. See the included screenshot, you'll see the 8300, but not the 8100.

I'd think it would go along the same lines. The screenie you provided is showing the OS under apps.

Did ya call RIM? What did they say?

Haven't called RIM, was trying to avoid that. I did try your instructions anyways, but no affect. Guess I'll reach out to them later on. Not super urgent, as I'm updating the new devices manually before giving to the users.

I had to read it over a few times myself.
I think the OP is trying to do an OTA update the handheld OS using Software Configuration.
To my knowledge, this is not yet possible. Not supported in current BES versions, and not supported by current handheld OS versions.

I followed line by line your instructions on how to index and create software configurations and it does not seem to work for me.
I ran the command "loader.exe /index" but apparently nothing happens. When I create a new software configuration and pick the shared folder, the bottom part of the window where it is supposed to show the applications only shows "Application Software" in bold with a "+" sign next to it. If I click the plus sign to expand it, nothing shows underneath.

Any idea on what I am doing wrong? All I would like to do is to push the BlackBerry Messenger for Sametime to my devices.

Try different version, i've had the same issue with 2 versions of LCS client.
Also make sure that the loader /index will create PKG and XML files. You might need to edit the ALX file so it will point to correct folder where COD files are.

The bold part was needed to be edited to point to correct folder. Remove it completely if COD files are in the same folder.

That was it ! Thank you - For some reason the directory "For_4.0.0\Release" was not in the right place. I put it in the right place and it all worked.

Same problem but I am not sure of the file structure.
Trying to OTA the ECL app from RIM

I put the Device folder from the zip into Applications folder, within the Device folder is BSG and BIN. Bin contains the alx and the cod files. The index files are being created but no app software is listing.

if you can help I would be grateful, BES v4.1
