Try opening a command prompt and typing
java -version
what version number does it throw out. I get
java version "1.5.0_06"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_06-b05, mixed mode, sharing)

I'm curious does doing it this way negate the issue some people had with the size of the file? or is it still limited?

I'm pretty sure the file size limit is still there. Since you are downloading them on to a simulated BB, it's just as if you were downloading on a real BB with a data plan.

Ther is some way around the file size limitation if you read the information on the backup files. it says something about the file system having a 128kb limit, so each section must be under this, but the sections can be enumerated and reconstructed in the stack.

I have an 8700c, and I've already downloaded ringtones > 200kb in size on the simulator and after restoring onto my own BB, it works great! I think my biggest size is 235kb (44.1 khz, 32-bit, mono) and it plays fine. Most of them range from 20s to 30s but don't see why you would want a ringtone any longer than that since it goes to voicemail before it finishes anyways.

When I browse to the according website that has my tone on it from my simulated BB, I get a "406: Not Acceptable-the page you are trying to load is not supported by this browser." error. In Detail, it says: "the application cannot accept the content (audio/adpcm)."
Not sure why not but I think it may have something to do with the Simulated BB software. I have a 7100G and the default for the sim is the 7290 but when I load the software, no matter what it comes up with the 7290. I go into the IDE and change it to 7100 and still nothing changes.
Any ideas fellas?
Thanks in advance and love (to lurk) the site.

In your simulator folder (..\BlackBerry JDE 4.1.0\simulator) there should be a file called "7100g.bat" Run that to start the 7100g. Also, I have never gotten a 7xxx series to play anything besides a .mid file.

My 7100t runs adpcm files fine but the simulator will not play them its self, but will save them, it might not have any sound card commands to play filetypes the host computer does not recognise.

I got this to work on my work computer. I tried downloading an adpcm ringtone on a 7100g emulator, doing the backup, then restoring it to my 7100i to see if I could put ADPCM ringtones on it but when I did the restore none of the ADPCM ringtones showed up on my 7100i.
Bummer. :(

Transfering OTA downloads
This method is great. I have been able to download ringtone and photos from the simulator to my 7290.
Is there anyway to save programs that we transfered to the simulator as "OTA".
I downloaded a few of the games from mobile.blackberry.com and would like to put them on my real phone.
Thanks

Gordon, I'm pretty sure there is, but you will need to find the right database to backup/restore (for example, we are using the Content Space database for pictures and ringtones). I suppose you could do a full backup from your real BB on to the simulated one, then a full backup of the simulated BB and restore to the real one, just not very elegant. Kind of the machine gun approach.

hey guys, here is an idea. Go sign up for 3gupload.com then just make your own ringtones on your comp (i find cutting an mp3 to about 35 seconds or so at 128kb works well) then upload them on 3gupload.com. Then just go to www.3gupload.com, click on locker, then put in your user name and boom, there are your ringtones. Save them onto your phone and your good to go. Keep in mind I had to keep the settings on 3gupload that I still had a Razr b/c the 8700g isn't listed and the other blackberry that they had listed didn't support mp3's. Any questions, feel free to ask me.

Thanks for the suggestion Ian, but you DO realize that this method is for those of us who do not have a data plan (or do not want to use up bandwidth on ringtones), right? Yes, uploading tones to 3gupload.com would work to get them on the simulated BB, but hosting isn't really the point of this thread.

Seamed like an advert, but im not watching tv lol. Or
http://huenik.com/blackberry no registration or out... but anyways.
gwemrick: in "C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry JDE 4.1.0\simulator\Java" is all the files on the simulated bb, you would need to workout which file, or files, belong to the application you installed OTA and copy it onto your Bb either by making an alx install file or through javaloader, just make sure you dir your Bb 1st and check your not going to be overwriting a file.

Hey, how did you get it to work with the 8700c, since there is no 8700 model simulator? Thanks for the help.

I have never heard of the 7100i supporting WAV's. I was under the impression it only supported MIDIs. Do you know what format to make the WAV's (bitrate, freq, etc.)

Actually there is one. You obtain it from the blackberry developers forum (google searched it)
www blackberry.com/developers/downloads/jde/index.shtml (man I need a couple more posts to be allowed urls!)
Download both the BB Java Development Environment 4.1 and BB JDE Component Packet 4.1 software.
