7105T-People say I sound like Charlie Brown's Teacher
Please Login to Remove!
I have had my 7105T for about 6 weeks now. I'd say 30% of the time the person I am talking to can't understand a word I am saying. They say I sound like the teacher in Charlie Brown. I am able to understand them just fine.
I haven't been able to isolate what might be the contributing factors since it seems to just come and go.(Me moving, stationary, them moving, stationary, landline, TMobile, Verizon, etc)
I had my phone replaced and this one does the same thing.
I have talked to a few other 7100 users who have complained about the same thing.
I searched this forum but couldn't find any reference to this problem.
Does anybody else have this problem or know if it has been discussed elsewhere?
Thanks.

I've been having the same problem with my 7105. And I find it to be so aggrevating when people say that can't hear me. I mean i pay all this money for this unit and I can't even get decent call quality. It's so annoying when people ask me to repeat myself, and say "what's wrong with your phone?" It drives me nuts. I also replaced my first 7105 only to have then same problems with my second unit. I guess the only thing i can do is live with it, or wait hopefully for a software upgrade

I think it has a lot to do with the GSM network. I get the same problem a lot of times on my 7290 w/ Tmo. Too many times to count I will answer the phone and I will hear nothing but static everytime they speak. I normally have to hang up and call them right back. I never had this problem in Texas but here in AZ where I get almost a perfect signal I get the problem. So my guess it has more to do with the signal and GSM network towers than the phone itself. But then again I'm only guessing so it's only my $.02.

Where are you located? I'm from NYC I have a 7105t also. I never have issues with people being able to hear me. So I'd have to go with Concept's idea.

The mic is located under the "5" key - and typically, you're placing the BB against your cheek when you talk - thus distorted CB teacher talk - it's a known problem according to T Mobile - Also - the antenna is located at the bottom of 7105, and if you grasp the bottom as you hold the BB and speak - bad reception

Thanks, in the future I'll try to keep the phone off my cheek to see if that helps.
I am in Minnesota. Most of my family is on TMO here but I am the only one that they complain about having bad sound quality(and the only one w/a 7105), so I'm not sure about the GSM only issue.

Is the mic really under the "5" key? because when i use speakerphone i put the unit screen side down and people still hear me fine. Or is there a mic somewhere by the speaker too? Just curious.

I too live in Arizona, and I also get that crazy static when I receive calls. So i guess it's the towers out here suck major B@ll$. Well I guess that solves that mystery. Just curious, where in Arizona are you, I'm located in Tucson. I'm wondering if it is a localized problem, or if it's statewide?

As silly as it sounds, you are correct mettman. But I have yet to experience this problem with any blackberry I have used. Especially with TMobile, I have never had problems with them. But it is a problem with this particular blackberry, no matter what carrier you are with. Do a warranty exchange, you will get a device that works, it is just really annoying!

Yeah, I am having that same problem. I had the 7100 and I never had this crackly issue. Now I am on my second 7105t and still no better. Does anyone know where the mic was on the 7100?
This is just a poor design in my opinion. I love the size of the 7105t and the phone in general, but it is too bad you cannot use it as a phone with any level of reliability.

I live in Scottsdale, and I just switched to the 7105t and T-mobile. Previously, I had Sprint. There were areas in Scottsdale taht I was not able to receive a Sprint signal at all. The 7105t gives me 2 - 4 bars in these areas, and I've been told that I sound like I'm on a land line when speaking into it.
I do not hold it against my cheek though; but do press it firmly against my ear.
With a non-bluetooth Plantronics headset, I'm told I sound better than talking into the phone alone. (With the Motorola HS850 bluetooth headset though, I'm told I sound pretty awful.)
I believe there are four T-Mobile towers within 10 miles of my home...so maybe it all has to do with the network (and towers) that you are on.

I have a 7100t. One thing that seems to help voice quality (reported here before) is to turn down the earpiece volume. There seems to be some interaction between the volume and the automatic gain control for the mic.
Also, many people tell me I sound better on my BT500 than on the phone itself.

I appreciate the ideas posted here. On a trip last week my wife asked me to get rid of my 7105T because of the horrible voice quality. I'll try the keep it away from my fat cheek and turn down the volume ideas.
Thanks again!

Do you think the 7100t also has the MIC located under the "5" key

I don't have any evidence to the contrary so I'm willing to go with that theory to see how it works out.

not to contradict my earlier post about why voice quality is bad at times, (mic under the 5 key) but while in Europe last week - I had no problems whatsoever regarding voice quality w/o headset, and that was roaming on tmo-uk, O2, orange and vodafone. I don't remember which BT headset I borrowed ( Plantronics Voyager? ) but the call quality was crystal clear -

Wow. That is really interesting, and the first time that I have ever heard that...how sure are you that this is the case? Do you have enough complaints on a regular basis that you know for sure that the quality improved?
The only difference I can think of would be the GSM frequency. AFAIK, T-Mo uses the 1900 MHz band only in the USA. In Europe, GSM systems started out on 900 MHz. Then, they deployed the PCN network using the 1800 MHz frequency.
So, maybe there is some GSM frequency dependency?
Anybody have any experience with voice quality in Europe?
