Default Playbook

Hello there, am new to this forum due to having a few questions about the playbook, Firstly is this available yet in the UK and if so what sort of price can i pick one up for? Secondly are you able to download BB messenger onto your playbook using the same pin which you use on your handset? Sorry if these questions have been answered somewhere in the messageboard.

Many thanks

Question 1: No idea. Why don't you search around UK retailers to see if it's available?

Question 2: BBM on the PlayBook isn't currently a stand-alone app. In other words, it only works when bridged to a BlackBerry phone. So, as it stands, BBM on the PlayBook is showing you, in real time, what's happening with BBM on your phone.

I've had a search around and can only find them being sold in the US at the moment. Any idea when they will be launched over here? I've had a look on the Blackberry website but nothing on there. also is there any plans to make BB messenger and application on the playbook?

Thanks for the reply

I'm a bit cautious about buying one off ebay because if UK retailers are not selling them then where have these one's come from. Its more than likely they're imports and are they compatible over here?

Mine's from San Fransisco. Bought at the airport. Everything will work but use a UK charger; the normal phone one or in the fullness of time get s 5v 2000ma, there's plenty on ebay. the latter charger makes the charge really fast.

Couldn't be simpler.

Thanks for the response, looks like ebay is the solution then! I've seen a few on there around the £300 mark is that a good price to pick one up for?

I have to say that you'd be on the money and it's a steal. I paid £321 for a 16gig; exchange rate included. You don't need more memory to run the pad faster as the extra memory is storage seemingly. So unless you're a gamer or film buff - 16gig works. Interestingly on chap at the airport alongside me bought 3 for for the UK!

Good

I can now answer question 1 for the OP: The BlackBerry PlayBook will be available June 16 in the UK. Pricing seems to be set as follows:

16gb = £399
32gb = £479
64gb = £559

See the BlackBerry website for pre-order info and other details:

Thanks for that I still cant decide if i should wait for 4G one or just buy one now. I think having a BB messenger application on them is important.

Just doubling up on your phone contract costs.

Had mine a week. London and back yesterday on business. Called in at the Holiday Inn High Wycombe for lunch; PB connected without any fuss to the hotspot in reception. On the way back in the car connected by bridge to BB9780 worked perfectly too. Got home PB connected to my Wifi..

When you bridge the PlayBook to a BlackBerry, you use the BB's data plan, not Wi-Fi.

Very close but not quite. When you bridge the PlayBook to a BlackBerry you use your BIS or BES connection that uses you BlackBerry data plan, but may be carried by your wireless carrier or Wi-Fi depending on the situation. If a BlackBerry is able to connect to the RIM servers (or in the case of BES directly to the BES server) via an available Wi-Fi connection then all BIS/BES traffic will take that route and not consume your wireless plan bytes.

Define "work." If you want to surf the internet, then yes, although the Bridge Browser is painfully slow at the moment. If you want to use other software on the PlayBook that needs a data connection, then no. Having your PlayBook Bridged to your BlackBerry phone will not allow most applications to access data via the BlackBerry phone. To do that, you need to tether your PlayBook to your BlackBerry phone, which is very different from Bridging the two together, and will likely cost extra (depending on your carrier).

The only applications that "work" with the Bridge:

- Messages
- Calendar
- Contacts
- Tasks
- MemoPad
- Bridge Browser
- Bridge Files
- BBM

Ian,

Thanks. I was wondering why the ability to tether was on the PB.
