$499 is what I've been guessing all along.

Maybe there's only five of us, but I am looking forward to it.

1. No choice cellular data, other than tethering to your BlackBerry device via Bluetooth. RIM should have just marketed this as "For BlackBerry Users Only".

2. No consistent application development platform. Adobe Air? Webworks?

3. The name is ridiculous. Playbook? Give me a break.

4. Every tablet maker is, and will be, playing catch-up against Apple's iPad.

5. RIM isn't even sure who they're marketing the device towards. Who is the real audience for this thing? Businesses or consumers?

RIM makes great products, no doubt... but they're still completely baffled when it comes down to marketing. There's no way they will be able to compete with Apple's iPad.

I've said from day 1 that the RIM tablet was a DUMB idea and waste of RIM's resources.

Haha Penguin, I have to tell you that I'll buy one not because it's RIM but cause of its functionality. So far I have to say that the Tablet is a winner and I love the fact its not dependent of another mobile contract. Its just what I need. To be perfect there shall be some sort of office compatible app.

Edit: Damn.... >$500 by March in USA... Probably £1000 in UK by december 2011. We will probably get it for the olimpic games I guess : /

Ok, I see a couple of your points, but it sure as heck will work for me. I had no interest whatsoever in another data plan, so tethering it to my BB will be perfect since I currently tether my laptop...I sure don't see it as a flop, however.

penguin just has a bug up his ass, :P

As for me, I just can't wait for it to be released. I've got some god damn moron at work who asks about it every xxxxing week. He makes almost 3 times my salary and is a literally the definition of techno-pesant. Has no understanding of technology except when he sees a "new shiny" thing he drools all over it and wants it.

We bought 5 iPads because we were told to and then 3 days later the Playbook was announced so we were told not to distribute the iPads..... because you know... the playbook is out!

So yeah, I can't wait cause then this guy will shut up.

My prediction is that not enough people will buy it to make it worthwhile to RIM.

If it makes the morons in your company happy... then that's great.

I absolutely agree with the teather requirement. WHY won't they just release it the asbility to throw a SIM card in. It's already going to be 'late to the game' and that's one of it's bigest downsides.

But I guess it's supposed to compliment the BB instead of being a standalone device.

I don't necessarily think that lack of 3G or 4G cellular data is a bad thing.
I think RIM just marketed this thing incorrectly.

The RIM tablet has WiFi... and anyone who has an Android phone with built-in WiFi hotspot (which is pretty much all of them now) is a good candidate for the Playbook.
RIM should be shouting this out to people. "Look, our tablet is great for BlackBerry users AND Android users." There's a ton of Android users out there and their numbers are growing fast.
RIM should accept that.

Latest pricing:

BlackBerry Playbook pricing to start at $399? | BGR | Boy Genius Report

A blog by the name of Mobility Insider is claiming to have the inside scoop on the pricing schema for the unreleased BlackBerry Playbook tablet. The site does not cite any sources xxx8212; anonymous or otherwise xxx8212; but claims to have first hand knowledge about RIMxxx8217;s tablet. The report indicates that the Playbook will be available with three different storage capacities. An 8GB model will retail for $399, a 16GB for $499, and a 32GB for $599. The site goes on to note that all models will be Wi-Fi only and will acquire cellular data connectivity through a tethered BlackBerry smartphone. They should have made it with 3G and not crippled the tethering for other devices besides BB's DOA. Steve Jobs called it !

RIM is one of the late brand names to announce a tablet, and theirs was the Blackberry Playbook, a very strange name for a professional tablet, as RIM advertises it. As specs goes, it’s very close to the Samsung Galaxy TAB, but there are notable differences: no 3G (will need a Blackberry Smartphone to connect to Internet in areas with no WiFi Hotspots), double the RAM plus the QNX based OS (not too much details about this one tough).

Best 7 inch tablet: current 7 inch tablets you should look for

There's a recent vid3eo on Crackberry where Mike L is speaking with a transgender reporter (just thought it was a little odd) and he's asked about pricing and being compared to the iPad.

Mike says "it will be competitive" The 'lady' asks him if it will then be cheaper then the iPad and he says "well I will argue that I think this has got a lot more power than an iPad"

RIM Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis shows off the BlackBerry PlayBook once again | CrackBerry.com

Will this not hit the $500 price point we were hoping for? ill it be $100 more? will it be $800? Who knows?!

Mike, get this thing on sale!

You should have received a second one right after the first. It was about the contest to win a new Playbook.

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...orums-com.html

About 10,000 email messages went out as blanks for whatever reason, only the electrons know for sure.

Can't argue with that comment. Since the BB PlayBook will be my Christmas present (that I won't get until sometime in Q1), I'm hoping it will retail around $500.00. RIM is known for the reliability of their products so am really looking forward to getting the PlayBook.
