Re: O2 Dumps BlackBerry PlayBook
Carriers don't like it because they can't sign you up for another data plan. Those with BlackBerrys have a free pass to use it without an extra plan. No wonder they don't like it. Doesn't mean it isn't a fantastic tablet though but that is just my opinion and I am only an "average" consumer. I love it!

In this case, it's the users who don't like it. The carrier is claiming that they are dropping the PlayBook because of end-user dissatisfaction.
I'm sure there's many people, yourself included, who enjoy the PlayBook and think it's wonderful. Nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately for RIM, those people are a minority at this point and that's not likely to ever change.

Re: O2 Dumps BlackBerry PlayBook
Not good for we users....this type of negative news presents data points to developers considering porting apps to PB....if customer dissatisfaction causes retailers to drop the unit...then why spend the time and money to port apps?
Better to spend time and energy upgrading features and capabilities on go-forward platforms like Apple and Android.

Re: O2 Dumps BlackBerry PlayBook
O2 seems to forget what Orange UK are doing with the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 - offering both for I believe £55 a month!
Why not offer a BB, unlimted data, and a Playbook for something reasonable? Surely more people would have a tablet if it meant it was more affordable! And what a way to get more BB's sold.

Re: O2 Dumps BlackBerry PlayBook
Yes!...I picked up my new Playbook yesterday and set it up fine no problem.
I managed to bridge / tether my O2 BB 9700 to the Playbook fine.....
Something told me to check my account balance today and imagine my horror when i discovered that I had run up an additional £56 in data charges in 24hrs.
I'm on on an original "UNLIMITED DATA" Blackberry O2 tariff and so it seems that I have been well and truly shafted!
I have called them, and the nice lady on the phone had never even heard of a Blackberry Playbook. I said that I couldnt afford to take the chance on additional data charges and that for the time being I would have to use wifi only. It seems to defeat the object......WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!
I dont think this is going to help RIMS UK sales and I hope something get sorted...........

Tethering and the bridge are not the same thing. You can tether, which may be charged extra, and you can bridge, which uses the BlackBerry smartphone data connection and is therfore invisible to the carrier.
Clearly YOU messed up and no one is to blame but you.

Yes...thats very helpful if you are a techo-geek.....but as far as I'm concerned "UNLIMITED DATA" is just that!.......its still the same amount of information going from the phone to the mobile phone mast and then on to the carrier and then to the net!!?
Would someone like to explain?.....

Re: O2 Dumps BlackBerry PlayBook
Sorry to hear your frustraion, Tethering is not part of an unlimited dataplan, I have been dealing with it for years here at my office.
it is the carriers choice to charge for tethering or not

Re: O2 Dumps BlackBerry PlayBook
I'm no techno-geek, I just pay attention and understand what's what AND understand the terms and conditions of my mobile service. And I try not to make unfounded assumptions, especially when being wrong can cost money.
Data isn't necessarily data, depending on the carrier. My carrier, T-Mobile, used to not charge for tethering, but I understand it does now, or is trying to. Other US carriers have always charged extra for tethering, I believe.
Tethering accesses the carrier network using DUN. That is why the carrier can recognize tethering. And it makes sense that carriers would see it as a different service to be charged separately, if a carrier chooses.
The bridge is using the smartphone connection to the BlackBerry/RIM network. To the carrier, there is no difference.
It's just data to you, but it comes from different sources via different networks, which may be priced differently depending on source and pathway to you.

O2 recently more or less admitted that there was no such thing as unlimited data. Furthermore they capped data at around 500mb although you can get more data if you pay for a higher data package.
O2 also introduced free tethering recently which is inclusive of your data plan. Ie. If you have a 500mb tariff then that 500mb can be used for BIS and tethering up to 500mb. Go over and you will be charged extra.
A call to O2 customer services may confirm all this for you but if you are on an older plan then tethering is not free but there is tether bolt on that you can buy. I am pretty sure that the new data cap was acros the board but I'm not certain.

Re: O2 Dumps BlackBerry PlayBook
I may be very simple minded here but if 02 isn't carrying the PlayBook because of "end-user disatisfaction" but they aren't carrying it, so how can they know what the end-user thinks of it? The media is beating the product to death but selling over 500,000 units in 2 months is nothing to sneeze at. So Apple sold more, great, but that is still a lot PlayBooks sold in a short time because the end-users are so disatisfied. I guess I am just too simple to get it.
I use my PlayBook for work and for home. Love the Bridge for work and love the wifi for everything else. The only issue I have with RIM for the PlayBook is the total ineffective promotion of the product. Nobody knows what it is or what it does or how it is different from any of the other tablets. This customer is satisfied that I have the best of the best. Again, just my lowly opinion. It is what it is.

Re: O2 Dumps BlackBerry PlayBook
Possibly they had some test units and passed them out. I rather suspect it is more to do with the revenue side of things. They will probably stock a cellular enabled PB which will presumably have native email, BBM etc.
The Carphone Warehouse is doing deals. Can get either a free 9300 + a free PB for £37 per month or a 9780 + PB ( both free) for £47 per month. Both contracts are for 24 months.

RIM did not sell 500,000 units. They shipped 500,000 units. Big, big difference.

Re: O2 Dumps BlackBerry PlayBook
They are also planning on laying off about 10% of their workforce. It would take a few more things to happen other than just one of the largest shareholder selling their stake for rim to collapse. Though right now, the future looks uncertain for em.
