Question Bold 9650 Radio Signal Strength (Any better?)

Please Login to Remove!

Ok, so it's been about a week since this phone was released at Verizon and within a day the OS went from .699 to .732 I believe? Anyway, I have seen numerous complaints here as well as some other sites regarding the radio signal in comparison to the older models. I have the 8330 but I don't want to start having dropped calls now 'cause of a phone upgrade so I've been holding off. Question here is, have you seen any improvements in the later OS release or do you think it's still going to require yet another release to get to the root of the problem (or at least be comparable to the prior phones that had a stronger signal)? I believe someone had mentioned that the Tour had the same issue when it was first released and an OS upgrade fixed it. Maybe I'm too cautious but don't want to give up something that currently works.

Wirelessly posted (Lets Go Canes!)

I have both 96xx phones. Signal strength on 9630 most recent OS's is better than 9650 but its comparable if you looking at non wifi environments. Having the wifi on 9650 compensates for this issue partly. Future OS builds with 9650 will improve the problem.

I just want to make sure that I'm seeing the same issue as others with the signal strength. My signal strength will completely go away (no bars showing on home screen) in areas where I know there is a strong signal. I have tried to make a call when this happens and it goes through fine. After a little while the signal will jump back up to a normal level. This isn't greatly affecting me right now as I don't make many phone calls but it is just an annoyance since this is a brand new phone. Is this what everyone else is seeing? Is this an OS issue or should I maybe switch out for another 9650?

I have exactly the same issue. My house has 2-3 bars. The phone often shows no bars but makes and receives calls just fine. I think it must be an OS issue. I, like you, though the phone might have been defective but I guess it is not. I just got it so I will give it another week or two before I decide whether to request a replacement.

IMHO, both the Tour and the Bold have poorer radio signal than previous models. Either one will be a disappointment. And, none of the OS upgrades have improved it.

Give time I do believe future OS will improve the signal quality.

Thanks, I do appreciate your optimism.
So far my 9650 has been working great, the trackpad is a super improvement.

It's kind of like the issues with the touch screen on the Storm devices, OS releases have really improved the usability of the Storm's touch screen. So I expect future OS release to improve radio/signal quality. (Of course that's just me, and it might just take a little time. )

Post Got to ask the obvious...

I assume you have updated your cell programming by dialing *22899...

I support a number of Verizon devices in my organization. Now a days mostly Curve II's and Tours, but I still have a ton of 8330's and 8830's.

Personally, I went from a Tour (multiple OS versions, but the last one was .732) to a Bold (9650) running .732. I have not noticed any sort of singal degradation between the two devices in the two weeks I have had my Bold.

A couple things. So far this year I have received two Curve II's that had terrible reception issues. These devices would drop an abnormal number of calls. Plus the screen and keyboard would both wiggle in the case. It definitely appeared to be a build quality issue and replacing the device took care of both issues. Next, I have not looked into it (because my radio COD seems to work fine), but if you think it is software, have you tried using a utility like Shrink-A-OS to swap out the radio files?

I hope this helps,
Jeff

I did on the my 8330, but I haven't done that on my Bold2 yet... Think I can use a Radio file from a different device?? Seems risky, since it's different hardware and their aren't many OS's on the 9650 to choose from.

Then again, how much time? I'm still holding on to the 8330 just because of the signal and the battery issues on the 9650. I wonder if this will be resolved before a newer model is released? It's frustrating because I'd love to get off of my locked out Verizon 8330 but I cannot justify the new unit until these issues have been resolved. Oh well....

I just got mine 3 day ago and it is by far better than my tour in all the aspects. Signal, battery and the rest. I do not regret and am not even looking back. Enjoy when you get it.

For my battery experience see this post:

Now I'm just kinda bummed that PTT doesn't work with .810.

The app itself appears to have loaded correctly (it shows up in the applications list) but the PTT option in the Options menu is MIA and when I push the button I have assigned to PTT it get the following error message:

Error starting ContactsApp: Module 'MPTT' not found.

I was looking to see what the MPTT.cod file I have on my phone is, as I added it from an old Bold 9700 that I had on ATT's service. The PPT feature on my verizon bold 9650 works fine, not that I want it. So if anyone want the MPTT.COD file, just pm or PIN me (my PIN 325e6004) and I'll send it to you. One question, does anyone know what the module ODPBrowser.cod is for or where it came from? I believe it is a web service thing used by a certain app (MobileFX) which I no longer have and would like to be rid of the extra files.

Anyone had this error: When starting an app you get an error message: Can not start app ..... Can not load module, too many apps loaded. ? What does this mean, I only have like 65 apps (including OS apps) running in the background, barely 7% of my available memory is used. I never had this problem on the Bold 9700 with like 170+ apps running in the background. Any suggestions? Please help, it's extremely frustrating!

Thanks!

Default Re: Bold 9650 Radio Signal Strength (Any better?)

I've had my Bold for about a week and the signal is terrible. i have a 40 min commute and have been dropping calls, previous was the Tour and a dropped 1 or 2 but nothing as bad as this. Its constantly searching for networks and getting 'sos' . im running v 5/.1006- i did the *228 update numerous times. will a software upgrade really help or could this be a bad phone? getting back to the store is a bit difficult for the next few weeks due to work.
