Question A picture I took with the 8100 (Tips on improving??)

Please Login to Remove!

Ok so here's a pic I took with my 8100 just now. I had the flash on auto, the white setting on "Indoor" and the quality on "Normal".

It's a pic of my wife who will no doubt kill me for this

http://snowboard.googlepages.com/IMG00014.jpg

Now here's a pic of my wife with a normal camera:

http://snowboard.googlepages.com/krystalsilly.jpg

Now, the 8100 pic is pretty terrible in comparison, does anyone have some tips to stop it looking so grainy? That's my main gripe, every picture looks so grainy and awful.

The only options I have are changing the White Balance from Auto to various settings like indoor, sunny, etc. And changing the quality from Normal to Fine or Superfine. If you use Superfine it takes about 20 seconds for the phone to become responsive after snapping a pic, which is annoying.

Any ideas, tips? Help? Thank you.

Go outside and take a few pics in daylight with the various settings, if they all look like that you gotta bad camera! Mine takes pics 100 times better than that even in low light!

I just took another pic, here it is:

http://snowboard.googlepages.com/IMG00017.jpg

It looks terrible! Is my camera broken? If I take it back to T-Mobile they're not going to just swap it they're going to make me troubleshoot in the store and mess around and send it back. I just want another one.

Any ideas on what to do?

Pics taken with my Razr look better, so it's obviously broken. How do I resolve this without T-Mobile giving me the run around :(

No one knows anything about these devices yet, so keep that in mind. Take it back to the store and show them. Have them take a unit, test or new, and show that it's the same or show you that yours is defective. Honestly, these are brand new devices, so you won't be getting a refurb replacement.

I guess all I can do is go tomorrow morning first thing before the line comes. I had to wait nearly an hour today with a crying baby in the store. :(

Called business care, and they said if it is indeed broken they'll do an in store swap.

Here's a final pic I took in the bathroom in bright lighting indoors. What's the verdict? Broken or not?

(Settings, Auto/Auto and Superfine)

That last one looks much better. I hate to break it to you but I think that's just the quality of the camera. Most camera phones don't have top notch cameras. It looks to be similar to the 1.3 megapixel camera in the Sidekick 3. Lighting is going to play a huge role in the overall quality of the picture.

Okay. :( I will wait a few days to see other peoples example pics. I can't locate a single example anywhere on the internet of a pic someone took with their 8100

The last two pictures, yes. Superfine. The first one "normal".

Low light seems to destroy this camera.

Low light destroys MOST digital cameras. A lot of pixel noise is introduced when you increase ISO especially with small CCD or CMOS sensors......noise levels MAY nominally improve with firmware update....but remember it is just a camera phone....good for quick, and in this case, very dirty snaps.

All the pictures that you posted appear to be about the same quality as those of a sidekick 3. It is the reality of a 1.3 megapixel camera and the very small, probably plastic optics used on the phone. If I had to guess, it is most likely the optics that is making the picture worse and not the actual sensor. CMOS sensors (just a guess based on price) have inherently poor signal/noise ratios so unless the sensor is flooded with light the picture becomes noisy and the noise translates into graininess. I have some really old pictures (640 x 480) from a 0.5 megapixel CCD senor camera which has a better signal/noise ratio and they look much better. Even when enlarged to 2x they only get slightly blockier but they still look better. The real difference was the sensor and the lens was about 5 times the size. However since the sensor had about 60% less pixels I really think it is the lens.

Ha! I got mine from the Water Tower Place T-Mobile store not far from there (Chicago). Yes it was overcast today. I might take a picture outside like that and see how it looks tomorrow.

What settings did you use? Normal? I see it's only 640 x 480 too. Let me know!

I used the default settings, I haven't even fooled around with it too much yet. I'm supposed to be writing a paper right now

EDIT: oh, the original is 1280 x 1024, just that tinypic resizes images.

For God's sake, at least select "superfine" as your image quality level and reduce the size from default to sth. smaller...that way, you will be less disappointed......
