BES 4.0/Exchange 2003 and BB OS 4.1 7130e's.

Company has offices in 3 US cities. HQ & one satellite office have 10-digit dialing, other satellite office has 7-digit. Mobile numbers are entered in the GAL in canonical format: +1 (###) ###-####.

Planning to roll out BBs to the satellite offices, but have none in the 7-digit area code to test with yet.

If Smart Dialing is enabled and correctly configured, will the office with 7-digit dialing be able to place local calls from the existing GAL entries? I'd assume so...but don't really want to assume!

What Is - Smart dialing feature

The smart dialing feature on the handheld allows you to set a default Country Code and Area Code. To call a number with the default area code, you need to dial only seven digits, whether you are calling from within the area code or outside it. Smart dialing also allows you to store the number for a corporation. To reach an extension within that corporation, you need to dial only Alt + 8 (letter X) and the extension.

Configuring the Smart Dialing Feature on the Handheld

From the handheld Home screen, select Phone > Options > Smart Dialing and complete the fields described in the table.

Field Description Country Code The code for the country that you call most frequently.

Area Code The area code that you call most frequently.

National Number Length The number of digits in the telephone number including Area Code but excluding Country Code.

Corporate Phone Number The number of the corporation, which you call most frequently.

Wait For The length of the pause in seconds between connecting to the corporation and dialing the extension.

Extension Length The number of digits in the extensions at the corporation called most frequently.

I think what you're asking is can you dial a local number using 10 or 11 digits from a handheld in a market where 7 digit dialing is allowed. If that's the question, then I've never heard of a mobile carrier that prevented you from dialling 11 or 10 digits even if they allowed 7. The landline carrier might give you grief ("you must not dial the number 1...") but even that's rare these days.

We got a BB with service in the 7-digit area code, activated it with BES and tried it with a GAL lookup. It worked. Don't know if the carrier was responsible for making it work or the BB, but it did work. So we're moving forward.

May be rare, but I still get scolded if I dial 1 for a local call on my land line (SBC in Houston).
