Not sure if this is really relevant but I think the simulator runs into issues because even though it doesn't have a wifi connection, the simulator uses your MDS instance which in essence is the connection on your computer.
You'll probably need to pass in the proper parameters as part of your URL. Take a look at this link if you haven't already:
