Default 8900 Holster by Speck - Battery Drain

Please Login to Remove!

Hello,

Any have the T-Mobile branded holster by Speck? While the holster serves it purpose well, the battery drains 30% overnight while in the holster with the phone turned off. How is it possible for the battery to drain if the phone is powered off?

To confirm this, I left the phone out of the holster last night and the battery did not drain at all overnight with the power off.

Thanks in advance.

A question or 2 for you:
  1. Which way do you put the phone into the holster, screen facing in, or screen facing out?
  2. Do you have your phone set-up for "Holster Mode", where it automatically LOCKS the keys when you put the phone in the holster?
I've always placed my phone in the holster face (screen) inward. With the 8900 Curve, this might result in the keys and/or trackball being pressed in, but I've always had my phone lock its keys when in Holster Mode. Also, I only use that holster in the car, to clip my BlackBerry onto my visor. The rest of the time, I use a leather pouch.

And last, but certainly not least, I always CHARGE my BlackBerry overnight while I'm sleeping! Doesn't anybody believe in CHARGING their phones anymore?

1) I normally place the phone "facing in" with the holster. The keys are obviously touching due to an imprint.

2) Locking the keys is the most likely the answer. Do I need to manually press the "lock" key each time prior to putting the 8900 into the holster? Or is there truly a "holster mode" setting where the keys lock upon being placed in the holster?

Regarding daily charging, I do not believe people have an issue with charging every night but more an issue with the 8900 not even coming close to the rated talk/stand by times listed in the "features and benefits" section.

Thanks for your help.

Hmm I too was interested in this case. Weird to have a battery drain issue when the sleep mode has the purpose of extending the battery life

I place my Javelin in the holster facing out, and it locks the screen. I got the Curve holster from TMO so as not to be naked. BestSkins arrived, but have to put the BB dpwn for along time to fully apply. They say 24-48hrs after applying the skins.

Yep, already been talked about in other threads about the leather pouches. The 8900 has had the location of the internal magnetic "Holster Mode" switch moved from where it was on the 8300 series. So the leather pouches for the 8300 do NOT engage "Holster Mode" on the 8900. That's what's wrong.

I just got my 8900 last week and the battery drains like 50% in a day.. my other friends with 8820 (?) told me he has to charge only once a week for moderate use..

Anything wrong with mine? I left the BT off but no improvement in battery life. Does WIFI cause anything? I am on the official t-mo version 114

No problem, glad to help.

Unfortunately, I've also been frustrated by this problem. OEM leather pouches for the 8300 series are plentiful... I can walk into my local Best Buy and pick one up with ease! Sadly, I can't find ANY brick & mortar store in my area that has the OEM leather pouches for the 8900. Looks like I'm going to have to order one online and wait even longer to have one.

How does it lock when I pull it out of the holster? It must work somewhat.

Yeah, I'm going to be ordering that one online this week, since nobody around here wants to sell me one in a brick & mortar store, and I'll have to use it until one of the 3rd party manufacturers makes one that's more to my liking (I prefer the flap to be full width, instead of the narrower strap RIM keeps insisting on using with the cases for the Curves and Pearls. )

It's because of the magnets that hold the strap/flap closed. They are larger, and therefore put out a stronger magnetic field, when compared to the Holster Mode magnets. So, when you're sliding your in and out of the holster, as it passes by the larger, more powerful magnet, that can sometimes activate the magnetic switch in the BlackBerry, locking your keys. But once it's all the way down in the holster, there's no magnet to "tell" the BlackBerry to turn off the screen, which is one reason your battery runs down so fast.

I upgraded to the new OS and the issue with the battery drain in the case has dissapeared. I suggest upgrading the OS to .152

I just got the 8900 last week and noticed right away that minimal use drains the battery on this BB. I had the 8800 prior to this and only charged my battery every 2-3 days. Now it seems I have to charge this one 2 times a day

what is up with that? (not using holster I pretty much always have it out due to email use)

I've read discussions about this, but always found it weird that my old 8300 OEM leather pouch worked perfectly with my 8900 -- magnet was in exactly the right place, and I could watch the display shutting down as soon as the 8900 slipped into the case.

I unfortunately broke the clip on the old 8300 case, and have been using an old 8800 case for the past week or so. Although the magnet on this case does "sleep" the phone, the case is way too big for the 8900, so I've been on the lookout for my next case.

Tonight I was at BestBuy, and saw a bunch of 8300 OEM lambskin vertical pouches on sale. The way they're package on the display card, you can open the flap and try the case to see how well your phone fits. I decided to give it a try...

I tried 9 or 10 of these 8300 cases (all that were on display), and found out something very interesting: most of the cases did NOT put the 8900 to sleep, but 3 out of this batch DID put the 8900 to sleep when it was inserted into them. I picked one that seemed like the best fit (all a bit different), verified that the magnet would "sleep" the 8900 consistently whether I put the phone in facing out or in. (I generally prefer it facing toward me, but it seems that the top strap fits the phone better the other way -- this is still up in the air).

So -- if you see these on sale in a store, try out a few and you may be pleasantly surprised. It's a very nice fit (not loose or sloppy), gets nicer with age, and is a very sturdy pleasant case for the device. Although you can get these for about $15 on Amazon, you won't be able to try half a dozen to find one that sleeps the phone properly, so I'm not too distraught paying BestBuy $24 for one (plus tax -- but no shipping since I picked it up).
