Default 8520 - saving SMS number

Please Login to Remove!

Hello All
I'm new here so please be gentle!

Got my first BB (8520) 2 weeks ago. I've received a text from someone I don't know but I wanted to save their number to Contacts. I have tried and cannot find out how to do this. I've been into the T-mobile shop, searched the BB website, and spoken to T-mobile call centre, and no-one seems to be able to suggest a solution, apart from:
1 - writing down the number (!!) and saving it manually into Contacts
OR
2 - calling the number and quickly hanging up - then saving the number to Contacts from the Calls Made list
Both options seem somewhat 20th century!! I would expect there to be an option when I press the BB button to "Save to Contacts".

I am throwing myself onto your mercy. Can anyone help please? Thank you in advance.

I found on my VZW device(Curve II) that if I open the threaded message, hit the Blackberry(Menu) button that I have a save to contacts option, which seems to work.

Yep.

Open the message thread.
Press Menu.
Select "Save to Contacts".

The OP is using an 8520 that does not come with OS 5, and therefore doesn't have message threading.

But 5.0 has been released for the 8520, correct?

Yes, there is no "Save to Contacts" option when I press Menu. Nor will the cursor move to the number itself - it won't go beyond the first letter of the text message.

Yes, though according to the above post, they haven't upgraded to it.
[The OP said they had got it 2 weeks ago, and I therefore assumed it was still on stock OS.]

MidnightDraven - do you know how I can tell which version of the OS I am on? In "Options", "About" the text says
BlackBerry 8520
Smartphone (EDGE, Wi-Fi) v5.0.0.681 (Platform 5.2.0.67)
then loads of other numbers. Is one of these numbers my OS version?

What's the best way to upgrade to a newer OS? Will I lose all my Contacts if I do?

Thank you

Oh, so you do have OS 5.
Yes the first lot of numbers is the OS = v5.0.0.681

In that case, opening a threaded SMS (a conversation) should allow you to save to contacts as mentioned above.

Help!! Am I doing this wrong? In a message, I can move the cursor around the text. The sender's number is in blue, above the first line of text. I cannot move the cursor above the first line of text, so I cannot highlight the number. I am very grateful for all the help so far, by the way.

You don't highlight the number.
You've opened an SMS conversation, press menu - save to contacts.
It should be there.

How about "Add to Contacts"?

if there's not, try the following:

while showing the txt message -> Menu -> Show Recipients -> Menu -> Select -> highlight number -> Menu -> Copy . . . then you can create New Contact and Paste number.

Chris, the 8520 has never had OS 4.2 I believe you may be looking at the platform number.

Rubbish T-mobile - it seems that a "feature" of their BB service is that you cannot save numbers as I want. My colleague at work who has a BB8520 too, but on Virgin Mobile, CAN save the number. We are both on OSv5 but the last 3 numbers of the version number are slightly different.

You have my simpathy

I don't know why companies feel like crippling the features of a perfectly good phone

Hi Adam, well we are actually on the same boat as I've just purchased the phone about the same time. My OS is .681 and does not have the “save to contacts” option in the sms thread as well. So its def not carrier based as I am using a diff telco here in the Philippines (Globe).

What I just do as a workaround is when I get a message from an unlisted number and want to save it is reply via MMS, copy the number on top of the MMS message screen then manually add the contact and paste the copied number. Yea it is a hassle but dunno why this feature is lacking in our OS version.

BTW, I forgot where I read this tip/workaround, but I know it was in a BB forum as well. HTH. =)
