I just got my 8310 and downloaded Blackberry Maps OTA and it works fine. Nothing needed to be done. Downloaded and it was in the applications folder and working fine.
Yes I am on AT&T.

Default Can't find LBS.alx file

I recently purchased the 8820 (AT&T w/ BIS data plan; OS v4.2) and am trying to install the BB maps per your instructions. I've installed the Desktop Manager and the OS to my PC. I was able to delete the vendor.xml file but I cannot find the LBS.alx file. I only see the following folders in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\

AppLoader, BBBI drivers, Modem Drivers, RIMDeviceManager and USB Drivers.
I've looked in each of these folders but cannot find any LBS.alx file. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks !

Did you install BOTH files? You need to install the Desktop manager first. Then there is another file to download that is the OS package for the BB. Download and install that file as well. Then you'll have those folders.

Answer: AT&T and some other European carriers, including Orange, have decided that they make more money selling mapping subscriptions than allowing you access to BBMaps. Here is how to make BBMaps show on your device with 4.2 and higher OS:
  • Make sure you have Desktop Manager installed to your PC. It can be downloaded from here
  • Make sure that the OS is installed to your PC. The OSxxx8217;s downloads for each carrier can be found here
  • Delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
  • Find the LBS.alx file located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8700-v4.2.1.96_P2.3.0.79. Note: The folder name under Loader Files may differ depending on the OS version installed on your device
  • Open the LBS.alx file with a text editor such as WordPad.
  • Scroll down until you find lines similar to this: (Note: each devices version may have differing lines of code.)
<!-- For 8800 series, hide the icon for Cingular (102), Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties. -->
<fileset SystemSize="normal" Colour="True" Java="1.0" _vendorID="~102|124|137|119|162|142|183|147|217" series="8800">
<files>
net_rim_bb_lbs_ribbon.cod
</files>
</fileset>
<!-- For non-8800 series, show the icon for all carriers except Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties. -->
<fileset SystemSize="normal" Colour="True" Java="1.0" series="8800">
<files>
net_rim_bb_lbs_internal_gps.cod
</files>
</fileset>
<fileset SystemSize="normal" Java="1.0">
<files>
net_rim_bb_lbs_resource_en.cod
</files>
</fileset>
  • Remove all references to xxx8220;_vendorID=xxx8230;..xxx8221; and device codes. Remove the text in bold as shown above and leave the > symbol at the end.
The above code would be changed to the following:
<!-- For 8800 series, hide the icon for Cingular (102), Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties. -->
<fileset SystemSize="normal" Colour="True" Java="1.0">
<files>
net_rim_bb_lbs_ribbon.cod
</files>
</fileset>
<!-- For non-8800 series, show the icon for all carriers except Vodafone Germany (124), Vodafone Austria (137) and all Orange properties. -->
<fileset SystemSize="normal" Colour="True" Java="1.0">
<files>
net_rim_bb_lbs_internal_gps.cod
</files>
</fileset>
<fileset SystemSize="normal" Java="1.0">
<files>
net_rim_bb_lbs_resource_en.cod
</files>
</fileset>

Save the file with the same LBS.alx name.

Again, each devices .alx is slightly different but removing any references to vendor codes and device codes in the lines as above will do the trick.
  • Now plug in the BB, open Desktop Manager and run Application Loader. Make sure BBMaps is checked and continue through to finish the process.
  • BBMaps should now have an icon on your home screen.
Please let me know if there is anything missing from the above steps.

If editing the above makes you nervous or you don't want to attempt it you can download pre-edited .alx file from this link. Simply find your device and OS version number and download the .zip files with the included .alx's. Simply replace your .alx's with the new ones and run Application Loader in Desktop Manager
I tried the steps above, and don't see google maps on my 8300. I see it under options->Advanced Options->Applications (it wasn't there before), but don't see it on my main screen. I removed all the reference to vendor or device in the alx, and installed maps through applications loader, but no luck. Is there anything else I need to check? BTW, the version for blackberry maps showing under advanced options->applications is 1.2.26. Thanks in advance.

John,
I just realised I could have placed those last two messages to you here. Feel free to post them to this thread. Sorry for any confusion. This is my first time on one of these types of websites and i am not sure of all the protocols yet.

I read somewhere else here that you say there is no GPS in my 8703e. The manual that came with the unit (specific to 8703e) talks about LBS and GPS etc. Bell Mobility also told me that the 911 service uses the internal GPS? I am really confused.

I also found in 'Applications" some thing called LBS-for Location Based Services- the version on my 8703e is 1.0.70. Are there other versions maybe newer ones?

The BBMaps app is not loaded by default on an AT&T device (regardless of what service you are using.)

You don't need to reinstall the entire OS to the device but you need the OS package (the one that's on your device currently) installed to the PC in order to edit the LBS.alx file so that it will allow you to install BBMaps.

What OS version is on your device now? You can check by going to Options >About.

Sorry, my bad. It should be Options >About (not status.)

You're looking for a number like v4.x.x.xxx

Get it from here:

https://www.blackberry.com/SoftwareD...ient=Rc4cZBaBN

Download it, then run it (by double clicking on it.) Then follow the instructions above in the first post of this thread.

Yes. Just download the software for the 8310 from AT&T. It's the same as the version on your device now. Install it and follow the instructions above. If you'll just follow the instructions above you'll get your BBMaps.

Also, you can just download BBMaps directly to your device from http://mobile.blackberry.com

However, this method won't give you the latest version, but it's much easier.
