Hit the green phone button. Then hit menu key and select Options >General Options. Change "Dial from Home Screen" to "No." Then you can use the keyboard shortcuts.

Yeah but what if you're on a SureType keyboard John? I use my shortcuts on my 8830, but no dice on my Pearl. For app switch I just use alt escape.

And when you're done - just use the shortcuts defined here.

No need to waste a convenience key on something that already has a single-key shortcut defined.

I've also removed all icons that are accessible via the Home Screen Shortcuts from the Home Screen into a separate folder. Now my BB Home Screen only has 3 rows of icons - no scrolling required.

I changed the left key to app switcher for a few days, but am going back to messages. The shortcut only works from the home screen and messages are my most used application, so I can jump to messages quickly no matter what app I'm currently using. The three features/apps I use the most are messages, browser and phone, so now I have the left key for messages, the phone key for phone and the right key for browser. Those 3 apps make up 90% of my bb usage, so now it's quick and easy to get to any of those three, no mater what I'm doing, with one single click. Love the BB.
